French forward Yael Trepy is in intensive care at a hospital in Sardinia after a swimming pool drowning accident on Sunday.

The 20-year-old Cagliari player was enjoying time with friends at a villa pool in Porto Cervo on the Costa Smeralda when the incident occurred. He was quickly rescued from the water before emergency services airlifted him to hospital in Sassari.

Italian newspapers La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera reported that Trepy ingested a large volume of water into his lungs during the drowning. Doctors placed the player into a medically induced coma following his arrival at the medical facility.

Cagliari Calcio confirmed in an official statement that Trepy was currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Sassari hospital. The club stated that it remains in close contact with medical staff and the player's family during his hospitalisation.

The Italian club requested privacy for the player and his relatives, adding that further updates regarding his condition would be released as soon as possible. Cagliari did not provide specific details on the circumstances surrounding the drowning incident.

Rescue and medical response in northern Sardinia

Emergency responders arrived at the private villa in Porto Cervo shortly after Trepy was pulled from the pool. Due to the severity of his condition, medical teams arranged an immediate helicopter transfer across northern Sardinia to Sassari.

Sassari is home to the main regional hospital network in northern Sardinia. Medical staff at the hospital placed Trepy in intensive care to monitor his respiratory function after liquid entered his lungs.

Trepy is a young French attacking player who joined Italian club Cagliari Calcio. Cagliari is based in Sardinia and competes in Serie A, the top division of professional football in Italy.

Porto Cervo and the surrounding Costa Smeralda coastline in northern Sardinia are renowned resort destinations. Many professional athletes and holidaymakers visit the coastal area during the summer months.
