Former Spanish international midfielder Ander Herrera has completed a return to his boyhood club Real Zaragoza, agreeing to play without receiving a salary after the team fell into financial distress and dropped to Spain's third division.
The 37-year-old midfielder terminated his contract with Argentine side Boca Juniors in July 2026 to sign for the Aragonese club, fifteen years after leaving the team where he began his professional career.
Herrera, who signed a deal running through to June 2027, will legally receive a mandatory minimum salary estimated at 25,000 euros gross per year. Under an agreement reached with sporting director Lalo Arantegui, Herrera will donate the entire sum to the Real Zaragoza foundation.
Contract termination and return home
Having featured sparingly during his spell in Buenos Aires with Boca Juniors, Herrera opted to cancel his agreement in Argentina to return to Spain. He previously came through the youth system at Real Zaragoza, wearing the club's colors from 2004 to 2011 before embarking on a high-profile career across European football.
Speaking to BBC Sport about his return, Herrera said that playing for his home club was probably the final dream he wanted to fulfill. He explained that returning to the place where he grew up gave him the opportunity to become a professional in football and as a man, adding that his passion and love for the game remain as strong as ever.
Addressing his decision to forgo his earnings, Herrera told the broadcaster that he had managed his finances well throughout his career and could afford to make such a gesture. He said that representing his city, team, and club for free was something he personally wanted to do, describing it as a privilege rather than a financial decision.
Career background and elite experience
Herrera built a reputation as a technically gifted central midfielder during his first stint at Real Zaragoza before moving to Athletic Bilbao, where he played from 2011 to 2014. He later enjoyed a five-year spell at English Premier League giants Manchester United between 2014 and 2019, winning domestic and European silverware.
Following his time in England, Herrera moved to French club Paris Saint-Germain, playing in the French capital from 2019 to 2023. He then returned to Athletic Bilbao for a second spell from 2022 to 2025. Over the course of his career, the Basque midfielder earned two caps for the Spanish national team.
Rebuilding a historic Spanish club
Real Zaragoza, historically one of Spain's prominent clubs and former European trophy winners, faced a catastrophic 2025-26 campaign in the second-tier Liga Adelante. The team finished bottom of the standings with just 36 points, resulting in relegation to the third tier.
The club officially announced Herrera's arrival on July 14, 2026, confirming an agreement for the midfielder to wear the white and blue shirt for the 2026-27 season. At Zaragoza, Herrera will play under head coach Ibai Gomez, his former teammate during their playing days together.
The veteran midfielder is expected to serve as the team's key leader as the Blanquillos aim for an immediate promotion back to the higher divisions. Club officials have set a clear goal of returning to the top tier of Spanish football as quickly as possible.
Herrera declared that Real Zaragoza belongs in Europe and should be competing for trophies alongside the largest clubs in Spain and across the continent. He added that he intends to use his experience, skills, and passion to help guide the club back to its rightful position.
Season opener ahead
Real Zaragoza begin their third-tier league campaign on Sunday evening with an away fixture against Gimnastic de Tarragona. Herrera is set to make his second debut for the club when the match kicks off at 9:30 p.m.
