Stade Rennais announced plans on Friday to challenge a French league ruling that requires their second match against Paris Saint-Germain to be played in Paris.
The dispute arose after the competitions commission of the Ligue de Football Professionnel, the governing body of French professional football, ruled on Friday, August 28 that the matchday 23 Ligue 1 fixture will take place at the Parc des Princes over the weekend of March 6 and 7.
Stade Rennais had expected to host the return match after the original opening-day fixture on August 23 was moved to their home ground, Roazhon Park, in Brittany.
That initial match was relocated just four days before kickoff due to severe heatwave damage to the pitch at Paris Saint-Germain's Parc des Princes stadium, forcing Rennes to organize the hosting of the match on short notice.
The opening encounter between the two clubs ended in a 2-2 draw, with Parisian forward Ferran Torres scoring twice to help his side secure a point.
LFP fixture regulations and financial penalties
Following the emergency relocation of the first game, uncertainty remained over the location of the return fixture because reciprocal venue swaps are not automatic under league governance rules.
In its decision, the LFP cited Article 501 of its administrative regulations, which dictates that venue inversions have no impact on the remainder of the fixture calendar unless exceptional circumstances apply.
The league also sanctioned Paris Saint-Germain with a fine of 150,000 euros for failing to meet regulatory obligations regarding pitch practicability at their home venue.
Nicolas de Tavernost, the chairman of the board of directors at Stade Rennais, argued last week that the return fixture should logically take place in Rennes because the Breton club were not at fault for the original venue change.
Before the August 23 meeting, Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique acknowledged during a press conference that while he was unfamiliar with the specific administrative rules, competitive fairness requires each team to play one match at home and one away against every opponent.
Stade Rennais legal appeal to Olympic committee
Following Friday's ruling, Stade Rennais released an official statement on X confirming they had taken note of the decision but intended to contest it further.
The club stated that while awaiting the full written decision and its underlying motivations, they were preparing an immediate referral to the Conciliators' Conference of the Comité National Olympique et Sportif Français to defend their rights.
The CNOSF serves as the primary arbitration authority for sports disputes in France, offering a formal conciliation process before sports organizations or clubs can pursue further legal remedies in administrative courts.
