Argentina Handed FIFA Sanctions After 2026 World Cup Final

FIFA has handed suspensions to Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina while fining the Argentine Football Association $321,000 after World Cup final clashes.

Argentina Handed FIFA Sanctions After 2026 World Cup Final

FIFA has sanctioned the Argentine Football Association and several national team members following disciplinary incidents during and after the 2026 World Cup final against Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

World football governing body FIFA announced the disciplinary measures after chaotic clashes marred the conclusion of the tournament, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to secure the world title.

Midfielder Leandro Paredes received the harshest individual penalty from FIFA Disciplinary Committee. Paredes was suspended for 10 official matches and fined $90,000 after officials determined he had direct involvement in physical altercations with Spanish players after the final whistle.

Heavy player suspensions and technical staff penalties

Argentine defender Nahuel Molina was also hit with a significant penalty, receiving a seven-match suspension for his role in the post-match altercations. The brawl broke out following a clash between players on the pitch before quickly escalating to involve multiple members from both team delegations.

Other players were also penalized by FIFA. Argentine player Thiago Almada received a one-match suspension, while Spanish midfielder Gavi was sanctioned with a one-match ban for his part in the post-game clashes.

Sanctions extended to Argentina technical bench as well. Roberto Ayala, a member of head coach Lionel Scaloni coaching staff, was handed a three-match suspension for participating in the altercations that unfolded at the end of the match.

Tension had been building throughout the closing stages of the final. Prior to extra time, Argentina was reduced to ten men after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off with a red card, a tactical setback that heavily impacted Scaloni squad before Spain secured the 1-0 victory.

Financial fines and stadium restrictions for AFA

Beyond individual suspensions, the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA) was hit with substantial institutional penalties. FIFA imposed a fine of $321,000 on the national federation for multiple breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

The disciplinary committee cited several specific infractions by the Argentine delegation. These included general team misconduct, incidents involving discrimination, security lapses during matches, and the unauthorized use of a sporting event to make non-sporting political demonstrations.

As part of the punishment, Argentina must play its next two official home matches with stadium capacity reduced to 50 percent. However, FIFA confirmed that one of those two stadium capacity restrictions has been suspended on a conditional basis.

Controversy over the Malvinas banner

Part of FIFA investigation centered on a political display following Argentina semi-final victory over England. After securing their spot in the final, Argentine players displayed a banner on the pitch bearing the slogan "Las Malvinas son argentinas" (The Malvinas are Argentine).

The sovereignty claim over the Malvinas Islands, known internationally as the Falkland Islands, remains a sensitive historical dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom, who fought a military conflict over the South Atlantic archipelago in 1982. FIFA ruled that using an official international football match to express political messages violated explicit provisions in its disciplinary regulations regarding non-sporting demonstrations.

AFA plans formal legal appeal

Following the publication of the sanctions, the Argentine Football Association confirmed its intention to challenge the rulings. The federation stated that it will formally request the full legal rationale behind the decision from FIFA before lodging official appeals through the governing body judicial channels.

The AFA aims to seek a full review and reduction of the suspensions handed to its players, coaching staff, and the federation itself. Should those internal appeals fail to yield a favorable outcome, the Argentine body indicated it is prepared to take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The ruling ensures that Argentina World Cup campaign ends on a troubling note. Beyond losing the world championship trophy to Spain in extra time, the national team now faces lingering disciplinary suspensions and financial penalties as it begins its next international cycle.
