Arsenal launched their Premier League title defence in commanding fashion on Friday evening, securing a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at home.
The defending champions dominated the opening match of the new top-flight season, scoring twice inside the first 23 minutes to take control before adding a third shortly after half time.
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side entered the fixture aiming to build momentum for another title run following their championship triumph last season. Coventry City, led by manager Frank Lampard, were playing their first match back in the Premier League after winning the Championship title in the previous campaign.
The scoring began in the 15th minute following a move started by summer signing Christos Tzolis, who joined Arsenal from Belgian club Club Brugge. Tzolis dispossessed a Coventry defender outside the penalty area, allowing Riccardo Calafiori to strike a hard cross low along the ground. Kai Havertz met the delivery without taking a touch and finished cleanly into the bottom corner of the net.
Arsenal doubled their lead eight minutes later in the 23rd minute after another involvement from Tzolis. Declan Rice set up the Greek winger to deliver a center into the penalty box. Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth attempted to clear the ball but misjudged his punch, sending the ball directly to Bukayo Saka, who tapped it into an empty goal.
The hosts controlled the tempo for the remainder of the first half, restricting Lampard's team to just two shot attempts that created no serious threat. Arsenal registered 10 shots before the interval as Coventry struggled to gain a foothold in the match.
Arsenal Extend Advantage After Half Time
Arsenal expanded their lead less than four minutes into the second half. Right-back Ben White advanced down the flank and cut the ball back from near the endline to Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian midfielder scuffed his shot, but Rushworth was caught off balance and allowed the ball to slip past his glove into the net for Arsenal's third goal in the 49th minute.
Despite their comfortable lead, Arsenal continued to create scoring opportunities. 19-year-old midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly came close to scoring a fourth goal when his powerful long-range strike narrowly missed the target. Tzolis also forced a save with a sharp effort from distance as the home side maintained pressure.
Coventry City Resistance in Final Stages
Although Arsenal controlled possession in the opposition half for most of the remaining time, Coventry created a rare opportunity four minutes before the end of regulation time. Jack Rudoni connected with a close-range header, but his effort lacked power and went directly to the goalkeeper.
In stoppage time, Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino attempted a long-range shot toward the bottom corner, but Rushworth reacted to make the save. The final whistle confirmed a 3-0 win for Arsenal, placing the London club at the top of the Premier League table with three points from their opening match.
