Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reshaping his squad with a more aggressive midfield style following their 3-0 Community Shield victory against Manchester City.

Having ended a 22-year wait to lift the Premier League trophy last season, the club enters the new campaign with elevated confidence and optimism. The convincing performance against Manchester City at Cardiff's Principality Stadium provided an early display of Arteta's updated tactical direction.

The summer transfer window saw Arsenal focus primarily on reinforcing their central midfield following a campaign marked by several narrow victories. Arteta remains determined to move away from squeezing out 1-0 wins or relying on late set-piece goals, seeking instead to establish dominance through sustained pressure and assertive positioning. Although winning remains paramount, the removal of title pressure has allowed Arsenal to adopt a more proactive mindset.

Arsenal opened their campaign by claiming the first silverware of the season in emphatic fashion against Manchester City. Forward Kai Havertz scored the second goal of the match at the Principality Stadium as Arsenal controlled the contest from start to finish.

Martin Odegaard Returns to Peak Form

Captain Martin Odegaard delivered a commanding performance in the Community Shield, capped by a sublime goal against Manchester City. Statistical metrics from the match underlined his complete control over the game. Among all Arsenal starters, the Norwegian midfielder ranked highest for passing accuracy at 94.8 per cent, total touches with 74, and dribble success rate at 100 per cent. He also recorded six possession wins in the defensive third and nine ball recoveries.

Odegaard previously established himself as Arsenal's primary playmaker during the 2022-23 season, contributing 15 goals and seven assists after Arteta appointed him club captain. However, the former prodigy, who moved to Spanish club Real Madrid at age 16, has endured a series of physical setbacks in recent campaigns.

The midfielder experienced a difficult, stop-and-start season last year due to ongoing knee and shoulder issues. An ankle injury sustained while playing for Norway in September 2024 sidelined him for two months and continued to affect him after his return. The resulting pattern of injury, recovery, and searching for form repeatedly disrupted his momentum.

Signs of a full recovery emerged late last season when Odegaard provided the assist for Leandro Trossard to score the decisive winning goal against West Ham United in May, securing vital points in the title race. He carried that form into the World Cup, starting five of six matches for Norway and registering four assists while demonstrating strong leadership. Arsenal management expects a significant campaign from the midfielder, placing responsibility on him to increase his goal contributions while leading the team's pressing structure in tight central spaces.

Bruno Guimaraes Strengthens Midfield Steel

New signing Bruno Guimaraes has settled quickly into the squad following his £75 million move to north London. Having promised supporters that he was ready to act as their warrior, the Brazilian midfielder delivered a physical performance against Manchester City, executing hard tackles and driving the team forward.

Away from the pitch, Guimaraes has quickly built close relationships within the squad. Central defender Gabriel, a fellow Brazilian and long-time friend, played an influential role in encouraging Guimaraes to join Arsenal through persistent badgering. Gabriel is currently helping his countryman adapt to life at the club.

Guimaraes has also formed a strong bond with fellow midfielder Declan Rice, with the pair bonding over previous on-field clashes when Guimaraes played for Newcastle United. Fans gave the new signing an enthusiastic reception on Wednesday during a surprise appearance at an Arsenal Supporters' Trust event, where hundreds of supporters gave him a standing ovation while chanting his name.

Beyond his physical presence, Guimaraes offers a consistent goalscoring threat in the attacking third. The midfielder has scored at least five goals in each of his past three Premier League campaigns.

Expanded Depth and Player Rotation

The addition of Guimaraes gives Arteta an exceptionally deep midfield options list. Arsenal's squad features a wide selection of central players, including Odegaard, Rice, Guimaraes, Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Ethan Nwaneri. Merino, a World Cup winner, has returned to full fitness ahead of the new season.

This extensive depth will allow Arteta to rotate his lineup to cope with the demands of domestic and European competitions. The level of internal competition has increased, contrasting with last season when certain players had limited involvement. Midfielder Christian Norgaard started only one Premier League match last season and was repeatedly left out of matchday squads in the final months after failing to meet Arteta's standards.

Managing physical strain remains a major priority for the coaching staff after the heavy workload of the previous season. Rice made 69 appearances for club and country last year while managing neural leg pain during the World Cup, and his minutes will be monitored more carefully. Winger Bukayo Saka also suffered from recurring injuries, and despite looking sharp against Manchester City, will be protected from overexertion despite his desire to play in every match.
