Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3-0 at Cardiff on Sunday to win their 18th Community Shield title and claim the first silverware of the English football season.
The match brought together reigning Premier League champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners Manchester City in the traditional season curtain-raiser, with Arsenal taking control from the opening minute of play.
Defender Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring in the first minute after being set up in a central attacking position by Myles Lewis-Skelly, placing his finish past Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma before the opposition had settled.
Kai Havertz doubled the advantage in the 28th minute following a sustained passage of play in Manchester City's 20-meter area. Martin Odegaard delivered a cross to the far post for Christos Tzolis, who headed the ball back across the face of goal for Havertz to score with a header past Donnarumma.
Manchester City created brief first-half opportunities through Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, but Arsenal defended comfortably to hold a 2-0 lead at the halftime break in Cardiff.
Third goal consolidates Arsenal dominance
Arsenal extended their lead to 3-0 in the 47th minute, less than two minutes after the second half restarted. Tzolis advanced down the left flank before finding Odegaard, who executed a shot feint and placed a side-footed finish into the net.
The Community Shield is English football's annual curtain-raiser between the champions of the Premier League and the winners of the FA Cup. Arsenal entered the match seeking momentum after finishing as Champions League finalists seven weeks earlier following a defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.
The match marked a difficult competitive debut on the bench for Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola after the Spaniard ended his ten-year tenure at the club this summer.
Manchester City struggled for intensity and cohesion throughout the contest. City defender Joško Gvardiol received a yellow card in the 53rd minute for bringing down Havertz. One minute later, Maresca made a double substitution, replacing Haaland and Nico O'Reilly with Omar Marmoush and Marc Guéhi. By the 57th minute, Arsenal supporters were chanting olé as their team maintained control of possession.
Substitutions and late chances
Both managers made additional changes on the hour mark. Manchester City brought on Rayan Cherki and Rico Lewis to replace Foden and Anderson. Arsenal responded by introducing Piero Hincapié and Bukayo Saka in place of Calafiori and Noni Madueke. In the 63rd minute, Saka beat Gvardiol on the wing and took a shot from a narrow angle despite having teammates inside the penalty area.
Cherki tested Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya with a powerful shot in the 73rd minute, but Raya pushed the effort clear. Arsenal then made a double substitution in the 75th minute, bringing on Viktor Gyökeres and Martin Zubimendi for Havertz and Lewis-Skelly. In the 78th minute, Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes made a sliding tackle on Rico Lewis to halt a City attack and regain a goal kick.
Arsenal nearly added a fourth goal in the 80th minute when Hincapié crossed for Saka, whose volleyed effort passed just over Donnarumma's crossbar. City threatened one minute later through a strike from Antoine Semenyo in the 81st minute, but Raya produced a firm save to keep a clean sheet.
Looking ahead to the new season
Arsenal maintained their press into three minutes of stoppage time to seal the 3-0 victory and lift the trophy. While Arsenal build on their victory ahead of the domestic campaign, Manchester City turn their focus to the opening week of the Premier League season, where Maresca will lead his side against Bournemouth.
