Barcelona moved to the top of La Liga after defeating Athletic Club 2-0 at Spotify Camp Nou thanks to goals from Raphinha and Fermin.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Pedri accelerated through midfield and threaded a precise pass into the path of Raphinha. The Brazilian forward rounded Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simon before finishing into an empty net.

Fermin Lopez doubled the lead in the 81st minute after substitute Karim Adeyemi delivered a dangerous cross from the right wing. Athletic defender Aymeric Laporte made a mistake attempting to clear, leaving the ball for Fermin to tap in past Simon.

Ballon d'Or winner Rodri Hernandez made his Barcelona debut in the 62nd minute, coming off the bench to replace Raphinha to a warm reception from the home crowd following back surgery.

First-half pressure and opening goal

Barcelona created early chances as Raphinha ran onto a pass from Xavi Espart in the first minute, though the effort was ruled offside. Athletic responded in the fourth minute when Nico Williams broke down the left flank and set up Oihan Sancet, but Pau Cubarsi cleared for a corner.

Lamine Yamal tested Athletic in the tenth minute with a shot aimed at the top corner. Shortly after, Laporte required medical treatment on the pitch following a heavy clash with young full-back Espart.

Athletic defender Rincon made a key tackle in the 15th minute to deny Raphinha when clear on goal. Three minutes later, Simon produced an acrobatic diving save to stop a curling effort from Lamine Yamal.

Barcelona hit the post in the 24th minute when Raphinha headed a cross from Espart against the timber. In the 27th minute, Espart received a yellow card for bringing down Inaki Williams after a defensive error by Gerard Martin, prompting Athletic manager Edin Terzic to demand a red card.

Pedri thought he had opened the scoring in the 29th minute, but his goal was disallowed for a tight offside against Lamine Yamal in the build-up. Athletic debutant Johaneko nearly scored on the counter-attack in the 35th minute before Raphinha netted the legitimate opener three minutes later.

Before the break, Simon denied Lamine Yamal twice from point-blank range, while Joan Garcia saved a drive from Inaki Williams. Lamine Yamal was involved in another incident late in the half when he stamped on Laporte's foot, forcing the defender off briefly before half-time.

Second-half pressure and decisive second goal

Barcelona restarted with intensity as Anthony Gordon sent a shot over the bar in the 46th minute. Athletic forward Gorka Guruzeta received a yellow card in the 48th minute after accidentally kicking Cubarsi in the face during a challenge.

Lamine Yamal struck the crossbar in the 53rd minute before Simon made back-to-back saves to deny Fermin and Gordon. Gordon went down in the penalty area in the 56th minute, but referee Ortiz Arias awarded a corner instead of a penalty.

Athletic introduced Alex Berenguer and Robert Navarro in the 59th minute for Nico Williams and Inaki Williams. Johaneko received a booking in the 60th minute for pulling back Lamine Yamal after being beaten by a turn.

Flick made his first substitutions in the 62nd minute, sending on debutant Rodri for Raphinha and Dani Olmo for Marc Bernal. With Rodri controlling midfield, Olmo and Fermin rotated in the forward role.

Terzic responded in the 69th minute by bringing on Benat Gerenabarrena and Adama for Mikel Jauregizar and Johaneko, who suffered from cramps after marking Lamine Yamal. Gordon saw a shot blocked by Laporte in the 71st minute, while Guruzeta headed wide two minutes later.

Athletic came closest to equalizing in the 74th minute when Berenguer found Sancet, whose powerful shot struck the post while Eric Garcia appealed for a foul.

Simon made another remarkable save from an acrobatic bicycle kick by Eric Garcia in the 77th minute, though the play was offside. Barcelona made further changes in the 79th minute as Jules Kounde and Adeyemi replaced Eric Garcia and Gordon.

Adeyemi made an instant impact in the 81st minute, driving down the right wing and crossing into the box. Laporte's defensive miscue left the ball sitting perfectly for Fermin to secure the 2-0 lead.

Simon denied Adeyemi twice more in the closing minutes with acrobatic saves, while Joao Cancelo replaced Pedri in the 84th minute to a standing ovation. Barcelona held firm through four minutes of stoppage time to seal the win.

Barcelona attack without a dedicated striker

Barcelona played the match without a traditional number nine, relying on Raphinha as the central focal point before rotating Olmo, Gordon, and Adeyemi into the position. Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed that no additional striker will be signed after negotiations for Julian Alvarez collapsed, though 18-year-old Egyptian youth player Hamza remains available in the academy.

Raphinha led the line while pressing heavily and dropping deep to link play in midfield. Young defender Espart also impressed Flick by continuing his run of starts at left back.

Post-match manager and player reactions

Flick stated after the match that Raphinha was the best possible striker for his tactical plan due to his movement and intensity. The German coach added that while he was pleased to keep a clean sheet, his main focus was creating chances and scoring goals, praising Espart for his performance on the left side. Flick has now led La Liga in 58 out of 78 matchdays since taking charge.

Terzic said his Athletic side made things difficult for Barcelona in the first half but conceded that it was normal to lose control at the most challenging venue in La Liga. The Athletic manager praised young defender Johaneko for his performance against Lamine Yamal on debut.

Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia highlighted the performance of opposing goalkeeper Simon, describing him as the match MVP. Garcia added that sporting director Deco and his team were doing excellent work to build the squad, adding that any new signings would come to help.

Rodri told DAZN after his debut that he was happy to get his first minutes in a Barcelona shirt after a long summer of recovery. He added that he needs time to build match fitness and backed Lamine Yamal to find the back of the net soon.

Athletic players did not make post-match statements to the media. DAZN reported that the squad collectively decided to remain silent following an internal club issue.

Off-field disputes and match background

The match took place amid transfer friction between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid over Julian Alvarez. Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin stated on Movistar+ that his club would not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances, citing a lack of ethics and transparency. Barcelona vice-president Rafa Yuste responded that Gil Marin's comments were disrespectful and crossed a red line.

Laporta also cancelled a planned pre-match tribute at Spotify Camp Nou for Barcelona's eight Spain World Cup winners. The decision followed an incident during the opening match at Elche, where a Barcelona member clashed with police over an estelada flag, leading Laporta to state that the context was no longer appropriate.

Athletic entered the match missing defender Yuri Berchiche following his red card against Sevilla. Although the Technical Committee of Referees publicly acknowledged that the dismissal was a clear error, the Appeal Committee rejected Athletic's appeal, leaving Yuri suspended.

The match featured a personal connection between the two German managers, as Terzic visited Flick at Barcelona's training ground in February alongside assistant Sebastian Geppert to observe training methods. Prior to kickoff, a minute of silence was observed for deceased season ticket holders and victims in Nepal and Tibet.

The result puts Barcelona top of La Liga after two matches, following their 5-0 victory over Elche in their opening fixture, in which Gavi suffered a knee injury. Athletic Club remain on zero points after opening their campaign with a 1-3 home defeat to Sevilla at San Mames.

Off the pitch, Spotify Camp Nou was named as a candidate to host the 2029 Champions League final, while Barcelona discovered their Champions League league phase opponents, which include home games against Manchester City, Aston Villa, Feyenoord, and Como, alongside trips to Paris Saint-Germain, Sporting Lisbon, Galatasaray, and Sabah.
