Coventry City's winless and goalless start to the Premier League season stretched to four games as Brighton & Hove Albion thrashed Frank Lampard's side 5-0 to leave them rock bottom of the table.
Five different Brighton players found the net at the Coventry Building Society Arena, with Charalampos Kostoulas, Malick Yalcouye, Lewis Dunk and Yasin Ayari all scoring alongside a Pascal Gross penalty. Coventry were also reduced to ten men when Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off early in the second half.
Lampard's agony continues
Lampard led Coventry to the Championship title and promotion back to the top flight last season, ending a 25-year absence from English football's elite for one of the game's traditional old clubs. He has described that achievement as the finest of a managerial career that has not always matched the heights he reached as a player.
Keeping Coventry in the Premier League now represents a far tougher test. Lampard spent £130million in the summer, but the effects of that outlay have yet to show on the pitch. Owner Doug King watched from the stands as his side's survival chances slipped further away, with fellow promoted clubs Hull City and Ipswich Town already boasting two wins apiece.
Coventry's supporters sang throughout the game despite the scoreline, and Lampard will be relying on that backing as he tries to turn things around.
Coventry cannot find a way through
Brighton passed the ball around with typical swagger early on, though Coventry steadied themselves and created some promising chances of their own. Jay Dasilva was a threat down the left and his dangerous cross was met by Jack Rudoni, whose right-foot volley drew a fine save from Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who was later named player of the match.
Brighton struck the crucial blow in the 39th minute when Kostoulas showed delightful skill to create space before driving a low right-foot shot past Carl Rushworth.
"We created chances but didn't take them and then we're one-nil down from a moment of quality, welcome to the Premier League," Lampard said. "Their second goal was the most disappointing because it was a mistake from us and then the red card, at 2-0, makes it very difficult. We need to be more clinical to give ourselves a chance in this league and we need to be honest about that. This wasn't a nice feeling."
Awoniyi sees red as Brighton pile on the goals
Six minutes into the second half, Yalcouye raced behind a static Coventry defence to coolly slot home Brighton's second goal. Awoniyi, a £9million summer signing from Nottingham Forest, was then sent off for elbowing Maxim De Cuyper, a decision Lampard did not dispute.
With the game already beyond Coventry, Gross converted a penalty for Brighton's third after Bobby Thomas fouled Kostoulas. Captain and centre-back Dunk then scored a stunning 35-yard effort that flew into the top corner, before Ayari added a neat curling finish late on to complete the rout.
Seagulls keep up impressive start
Brighton had already beaten Aston Villa 4-0 on the opening day of the season, and this latest thrashing extended their strong start under manager Fabian Hurzeler. The 13 goals they have scored in their opening four league games make them the Premier League's current top scorers.
"I wouldn't say it was a complete performance, but our goalkeeper was great and we were ruthless in front of goal," Hurzeler said. "If you have that desire to score then you can do it from different positions. I wasn't surprised by Lewis' goal because he has a great right foot and shows that technique on a daily basis in training."
Brighton finished eighth in the Premier League last season, securing qualification for the Europa Conference League. They next travel to face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup before a home game against Arsenal.
"We should stay very humble but also have a belief that we can go anywhere and compete," Hurzeler added.
