Toulouse Sell Yann Gboho To Coventry City In Premier League

Toulouse Football Club has confirmed the transfer of attacking midfielder Yann Gboho to Coventry City, closing out a saga that ran on for days after the summer transfer window had already shut.

The two clubs announced the deal on Friday, September 4, three days after the transfer window closed in both Ligue 1 and the Premier League on Tuesday. The transaction may well have been agreed before the deadline, with the announcement delayed while the administrative validation of the move was completed.

Toulouse Football Club, known as TFC, plays in Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, and is based in the southwestern city of Toulouse. Gboho, who wore the number 10 shirt, had been with the club since joining in January 2024.

Left out of the Lille match

Gboho was already no longer with the squad by Thursday evening. He was not included by coach Jens Berthel Askou in the group for Toulouse's third Ligue 1 fixture of the season, which the club lost 1-0 at home to Lille.

Le milieu de terrain a cru inscrire un superbe but dès le début de rencontre.

Shortly before that match kicked off, Toulouse president Olivier Cloarec addressed the situation in comments to the broadcaster Ligue 1+. He said the club was waiting on the matter and that a resolution should come within the following hours. He added that he could not say which way things would go, because he genuinely did not know, but that he hoped there would be clarity soon.

Reunion with former Toulouse teammates

Gboho is now officially a Coventry City player. The club was promoted to the Premier League this season and is managed by Frank Lampard, the former Chelsea and England midfielder who has gone on to a career in management.

At Coventry, Gboho will link up again with two former Toulouse teammates who also left the French club over the summer: Dayann Methalie, who joined Sunderland, and Emersonn, who signed for Ipswich Town.

Why Toulouse wanted him sold

Toulouse's hierarchy had wanted to sell Gboho this summer rather than risk losing him for nothing at a later point. His contract at the club was due to run until June 2027, and the club wanted to avoid the prospect of him leaving on a free transfer as early as next winter or the following summer.

With Methalie, Emersonn and now Gboho all sold this summer, Toulouse ends its transfer window business on what the club will regard as a positive note, having offloaded three players before their contracts moved closer to expiry.
