Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark faces an automatic one-game WNBA suspension after receiving her eighth technical foul of the season during a 90-86 victory over the Chicago Sky. Barring an overturn of the call by the league on appeal, Clark will miss Indiana's upcoming game against the New York Liberty on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the third quarter of the matchup as Clark was driving toward the basket. Chicago defender Natasha Cloud blocked off Clark's lane, forcing the Fever guard to throw a pass in the direction of a teammate to keep the play alive. As her momentum carried her forward, Clark made contact with official Genesis Perrymond and appeared to extend her forearm and elbow to move the referee away.
After about a second of game time elapsed, Perrymond blew her whistle and called a technical foul on Clark. Under WNBA rules, receiving an eighth technical foul in a season triggers an automatic one-game suspension unless the call is overturned on appeal.
Social media account BrickCenter (@BrickCenter_) posted video of the play on August 8, 2026, writing that the league has the worst officials in sports and confirming Clark received a tech for accidentally bumping into a referee. Clark was stunned by the decision, as was Indiana head coach Stephanie White.
White began screaming at Perrymond for an explanation and was quickly assessed a technical foul of her own. Speaking to reporters after the game, White confirmed that the Fever have appealed Clark's technical foul.

"My tech was for saying that's bulls***," White told reporters after the game. "Even though I heard the F-bomb the whole f***ing game. My tech was for saying that's bulls***."
White addressed Clark's foul, calling it a bad call involving incidental contact while flying out of control. "I thought her teammates should have come up and talked to her about that as well," White said. "That's really bad. That s*** happens all the time in a game, officials have to have some awareness in those moments and it didn't happen."
On the ABC broadcast, reporter Holly Rowe confirmed the technical foul was given because of extra contact with Clark's forearm. A post-game pool report that will provide further explanation had not yet been published.

When Rowe asked Clark about the technical foul after the game, the player laughed in response. "She said I ran into her, I've already watched it on tape," Clark said. "So, we'll let the league decide, but it wasn't intentional or anything. So I'm hoping it's getting rescinded."
Clark maintained that she did not say anything to the referee and told Rowe, "see you in New York on Tuesday," when the Fever play the New York Liberty. Clark finished the game with 26 points, 11 assists, four rebounds, and two steals despite committing six turnovers.
Teammate Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever in scoring with 27 points to help Indiana secure the 90-86 victory over the Sky.
