Celtic have completed the signing of Danish midfielder Oliver Sorensen on an initial one-year loan deal from Serie A club Parma, with the Parkhead side holding an option to make the transfer permanent.
The 24-year-old midfielder becomes the fifth summer arrival for the reigning Scottish Premiership champions, but manager Martin O'Neill is seeking to add up to five more players before the European transfer window closes.
Sorensen began his senior career with Danish Superliga club Midtjylland before moving to Italian football with Parma a year ago. During his debut season in Serie A with the Emilia-Romagna side, he established himself in the team by making 34 appearances before being persuaded by O'Neill to move to Glasgow as a key figure in the Celtic midfield for at least the coming campaign.
"I feel lucky to be a part of this club now," Sorensen said after finalizing his arrival at Celtic Park. "I hope the style of play will suit me. They want to attack, they want to go forward. I hope I can contribute to that. I'm ready to give 100 per cent. This is the next stage on my football journey."
Sorensen added that he views the move to Scotland as a pivotal stage in his development as a professional footballer. "I'm 24 now and the next three or four years should be my peak. I hope I can give them to Celtic," he said.
Potential transfer targets
Sorensen is expected to be joined in Glasgow by 19-year-old Dutch midfielder Joel van den Berg from Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven. Van den Berg, who broke into the first team at the Eindhoven club last season, is poised to complete a permanent £3.5 million move to Celtic Park. Like Sorensen, he is viewed nominally as a box-to-box midfielder in the mould of Belgian international Arne Engels.
Celtic are also targeting 18-year-old Chelsea striker Shim Mheuka on loan. Although Mheuka has made only a handful of first-team appearances for the Premier League side at Stamford Bridge, he is highly rated by coaches in West London. If secured, the teenage forward will be asked to provide attacking back-up to Kasper Hogh and Camilo Duran over the course of the campaign.
In goal, Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is expected to provide direct competition for Finnish goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo after agreeing a season-long switch from Molineux. The 31-year-old shot-stopper, who started out at Manchester United, brings senior experience having earned four caps for England.
Further down the pitch, O'Neill remains eager to reinforce multiple positions across the squad before the deadline. Despite adding Sorensen and targeting Van den Berg for No 8 roles, the veteran manager is still hopeful of sealing a deal for Gvidas Gineitis, with Celtic remaining in active negotiations with Italian club Torino over the Lithuanian international who operates in a deeper midfield role.
The Scottish champions are also understood to have opened transfer talks with Dutch outfit Feyenoord for Swiss right-back Jordan Lotomba. In addition, O'Neill is seeking defensive cover at left-back for Scotland international Kieran Tierney, with Chelsea defender Landon Emenalo identified as the likeliest target.
Squad departures and team update
While Celtic continue their pursuit of late window acquisitions, several players have already departed Parkhead. Japanese midfielder Reo Hatate has left the club to complete a transfer to English side Burnley, while Championship club Preston North End completed a £3 million deal to sign Irish striker Johnny Kenny.
Celtic assistant manager Shaun Maloney, the former Celtic and Scotland winger, acknowledged the fluid nature of late transfer business while emphasizing the necessity of replacing departing talent. "I don't think anything's confirmed just yet with the guys," Maloney said. "But I think the profiles of what we need in those positions are really important that we do replace what we've lost."
Maloney also provided a fitness update ahead of Celtic's Scottish Premiership fixture against Aberdeen at Celtic Park tonight. Both left-back Kieran Tierney and striker Kasper Hogh are doubts for the match, though the coaching staff expect both players to be in contention to face St Mirren on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old Callum Osmand faces a period on the sidelines following an ankle injury sustained during Celtic's domestic cup victory over Falkirk. Maloney confirmed the setback is less severe than first feared, describing it as a non-contact ankle issue that will keep Osmand out for a few weeks.
Aberdeen fixture and defensive improvements
Celtic enter their match against Aberdeen looking to build momentum following a mixed run of domestic and European results. Although Celtic responded to a heavy 5-1 defeat against Austrian Bundesliga side LASK in Europe by securing a 2-1 victory over Falkirk, moments of defensive slackness during the performance left the coaching staff seeking improvements without the ball.
Speaking on the tactical challenge presented by Aberdeen, Maloney highlighted the opposition's offensive threat ahead of tonight's game. "They have got really good attacking players," Maloney said. "I know the majority of their squad, whether they have been in the Premiership before or not. They are a really strong side attacking-wise."
Maloney noted that Aberdeen operate differently from Stephen's St Mirren team and confirmed Celtic are preparing to face either a back four or a back five, though Aberdeen have predominantly deployed a four-man defense this season. "They have a big threat in the final third," Maloney added, noting that Scotland striker Kevin Nisbet is in brilliant form ahead of what he anticipates will be a tough game.
Addressing Celtic's overall tactical balance, Maloney urged the squad to display greater firmness when out of possession. "We have looked really good attacking," Maloney said. "As a team and as a group, I think we can definitely tighten up without the ball. We have to be more aggressive."
