Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso deployed a back three for the first time, leading his team to a conclusive 3-0 victory against AC Milan in Asia. The dominant performance delivered Chelsea's first clean sheet since Alonso took charge, standing in contrast to their leaky pre-season defensive displays.

The Blues controlled the match throughout while maintaining consistent personnel, making only two substitutions before the 80th minute. In contrast, AC Milan introduced wholesale substitutions at half-time.

Alonso implemented the defensive structure that he previously used effectively at Bayer Leverkusen. Summer signing Marco Palestra featured at left wing-back, while Pedro Neto started on the opposite side, with both players operating virtually as wingers while in possession.

When Chelsea attacked, Neto ran beyond Cole Palmer on the right wing to stretch play with a penetrating threat. Palmer started to the right of Danny Welbeck, while Palestra provided constant movement on the left flank.

Joao Pedro has been on fire during pre-season, scoring five times, and Xabi Alonso’s back three seemed to bring out the best in him

Back Three System and Attacking Rotation

Chelsea lined up primarily in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Welbeck leading the attack and Palmer and Joao Pedro playing on either side. The front three demonstrated fluid rotation, occasionally switching to two attackers up front with one positioned behind.

That attacking freedom produced a second goal less than a minute after half-time. Neto sent a dinked cross into the penalty area from the right, finding Pedro's run to double the lead.

Neto carried minimal defensive duties as right wing-back, allowing him to focus on attacking. Opposing full-backs were forced to manage Palmer inside while tracking Neto's threat out wide.

Pedro flourished as a technical Brazilian number 10 who can also play wide or up front. He recorded four shots, scored twice, missed one big chance, and registered the most touches inside the AC Milan box, bringing his pre-season tally to five goals.

Centre-back Josh Acheampong also thrived in the new set-up, exuding confidence on and off the ball. After putting an earlier mistake behind him, Acheampong recovered brilliantly in the first half to make a last-ditch challenge on Rafael Leao.

Chelsea executed the performance at 70 per cent strength with four pre-season matches completed. The back three offers an appealing option for their Premier League opener against Fulham, with Reece James, Maxence Lacroix, Enzo Fernandez, Malo Gusto, and Morgan Rogers scheduled to report next week.

Immediate Impact of Set-Piece Coach Austin MacPhee

New set-piece coach Austin MacPhee made an instant impact after flying to Asia this week to join Chelsea's pre-season tour. Chelsea paid a release clause just under £1 million to extract MacPhee from his contract at Aston Villa and bring him to Stamford Bridge.

The expense is significant for a backroom staff member, but addresses a critical weakness. Chelsea registered a negative set-piece goal difference last season, conceding 17 goals while scoring 14, which prompted Alonso to recruit one of the world's top dead-ball specialists.

MacPhee's work produced two goals from corners against AC Milan. The first came when Moises Caicedo delivered a pinpoint cross to find Pedro's intelligent movement, allowing the unmarked attacker to glance a header into the far corner.

The second set-piece goal resulted from a training ground routine. Romeo Lavia floated a corner cross to the edge of the area, where Caicedo arrived to guide the ball into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot.

Midfielder Romeo Lavia completed his first full 90 minutes for Chelsea since arriving from Southampton for £53 million in 2023. The 22-year-old midfielder has suffered persistent injuries in West London, but built on his 25-minute outing against Juventus three days earlier on Saturday.

Lavia delivered a lively performance alongside Caicedo in midfield, demonstrating the talent to become one of the Premier League's top midfielders if he stays fit. He provided an assist from a corner, made eight recoveries, and rarely gave the ball away.

Completing the match will boost Lavia's confidence as he aims for body stability. He has two remaining pre-season opportunities to build up match minutes before Chelsea launch their official campaign.
