Chelsea secured their second victory of the Premier League season after beating Brighton 4-3 in a thrilling seven-goal encounter at Stamford Bridge.
Xabi Alonso's side established a commanding three-goal lead inside the opening 32 minutes of the match. However, the Blues were forced to withstand a spirited fightback from Brighton before securing all three points in West London.
Electric start at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea displayed their attacking quality from the opening whistle, sweeping into an early lead after just four minutes when midfielder Romeo Lavia found the net. The home supporters at Stamford Bridge had further reason to celebrate ten minutes later when winger Pedro Neto doubled the advantage in the 14th minute.
Alonso's team continued to dominate the early exchanges, and Joao Pedro extended the lead to 3-0 in the 32nd minute. The three-goal cushion reflected Chelsea's scintillating forward play, which ripped the visiting defense apart during a dominant opening half-hour.
Brighton managed to stem the tide before the interval. Malick Yalcouye struck in the 35th minute to give the visitors hope, sending the teams into the dressing rooms at half-time with Chelsea leading 3-1.
Brighton fight back in second half
The second half exposed some of the defensive vulnerabilities that have raised concerns about Chelsea this season. Brighton continued to fly forward in search of goals and reduced the deficit to 3-2 in the 63rd minute when Joao Pedro inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
With tension mounting among the home crowd, Cole Palmer provided the crucial response for Chelsea. The England international scored in the 74th minute to make it 4-2, restoring a two-goal cushion and calming home nerves as Brighton pushed for an equaliser.
Late injury and substitution drama
Chelsea suffered a setback in the 82nd minute when midfielder Moises Caicedo was forced off with an injury. Caicedo, who had been on the pitch for barely 15 minutes as a second-half substitute, went down in obvious discomfort and could not continue.
Valentin Barco was introduced as Caicedo's replacement against his former club, drawing a hostile response from the travelling Brighton supporters in the away end. In the 86th minute, Chelsea fans urged Barco to shoot after he received a pass from Joao Pedro, but the substitute opted to cross instead and missed everyone in the penalty area.
Referee Michael Oliver was kept busy in the closing stages, issuing two late yellow cards to Chelsea players. Olivier Boscagli was booked in the 89th minute after fouling Morgan Rogers, who had driven forward through the midfield. Two minutes later, Joao Costinha received a yellow card in the 91st minute for stopping Joao Pedro on a counter-attack.
Brighton set up a nervous final minute when Pascal Gross headed home in the 96th minute (90+6') to make it 4-3. However, the goal arrived too late for the Seagulls to complete their comeback, and Chelsea held on for the win.

Calvert-Lewin earns point for Leeds

Leeds pressed for an equaliser in the second period and finally restored parity in the 79th minute. Striker Lukas Nmecha drove a low ball across the six-yard box, allowing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to tap home from close range to earn Leeds a valuable point.
Sunderland defeat Fulham for first win
Sunderland claimed their first three points of the Premier League season with a 1-0 home victory against Fulham. After a tight and goalless first half, Wilson Isidor scored the winning goal in the 75th minute to break the deadlock.
The result condemned Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa to a second consecutive defeat. Meanwhile, attention in the Premier League turns to Old Trafford, where Manchester United host Ipswich Town in the day's remaining action.
