Chelsea have overhauled their squad during a whirlwind summer transfer window by shifting recruitment toward experienced players under new manager Xabi Alonso.
The 44-year-old Spanish manager, who took charge following talks in May, agreed with Chelsea sporting directors that the team needed greater maturity to succeed in the Premier League. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali had previously outlined plans at a Los Angeles conference in April to target proven, ready-made talent.
Chelsea sources confirmed that transfer decisions were made through a shared partnership between Alonso and the sporting leadership team, rather than being driven by any single manager, owner, or scout. The leadership team includes sporting directors Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields, Sam Jewell, and newly appointed fifth sporting director Dave Fallows.

To evaluate prospective signings, Chelsea operate a dedicated section within their scouting department that conducts character background checks. Scouts place extensive calls to former coaches, team-mates, physios, kit-men, and trusted club connections to assess a player's personality before finalizing any transfer.
While evaluating younger talent like South American teenagers can be difficult due to limited information, the process proved straightforward for 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck. Winstanley and Jewell previously worked with Welbeck when bringing him from Watford to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2020.

Recruitment Strategy and Experienced Signings
After learning Welbeck could leave Brighton, where he scored 13 Premier League goals last season, Chelsea directors presented the idea to Alonso. The manager approved the signing, having faced Welbeck during his playing career, including a 1-1 Champions League draw between Real Madrid and Manchester United at the Bernabeu in February 2013, where Welbeck opened the scoring before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised for Jose Mourinho's side against Sir Alex Ferguson's team.
Daily Mail Sport confirmed the approach for Welbeck while at Hotel Sweeney's rooftop bar in Sydney. Welbeck arrived first, followed by 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford, adding a combined 863 Premier League appearances to Chelsea's squad. Welbeck also joined his new team-mates as they moved on to Hong Kong.

Before securing Welbeck and Henderson, Chelsea submitted an £8 million bid for 33-year-old Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, whom Alonso previously managed at Bayer Leverkusen. A source at the Stadium of Light described the offer as "insulting," and although Chelsea considered a second bid under £15 million, Xhaka recommitted to Sunderland, leading Chelsea to secure Welbeck and Henderson for minimal cost.

Chelsea also completed major deals for ready-made players who passed character checks, signing defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £43 million, midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million, and defender Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano for £16.3 million. The club maintained that predecessors, including former manager Enzo Maresca prior to his departure, were also consulted on transfer targets.

Pre-Season Tour and Squad Management
During pre-season, Chelsea travelled 24,456 miles over 56 flight hours, visiting Sydney, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Malaysia before returning to London. Sporting directors split duties between London, Sydney, and Hong Kong to cover all time zones during transfer operations.

The team played eight friendly matches, including closed-doors victories of 3-1 against Crawley Town and 3-0 against Bromley at Cobham. Striker Joao Pedro finished as the top performer with eight goals in eight games and received the No 9 shirt, replacing Liam Delap, who has been made available for sale or loan.

Alonso tested both back-three and back-four tactical systems during pre-season, utilizing the versatility of new signings like Palestra. He also worked individually with 22-year-old midfielder Romeo Lavia, who had not completed 90 minutes in a competitive match since joining from Southampton in 2023 due to an injury-related mental block.

Alonso kept Lavia on the pitch for the full duration of a 3-0 friendly win over AC Milan in Jakarta. Following the match, the squad celebrated Lavia's achievement in the dressing room with 12 boxes of pizza from Pizza Marzano.

Looking Ahead to the New Season
On tour, Alonso spoke openly about squad size, stating that Chelsea needed to clear out at least half of their 10 centre-backs, while also commenting on wider football topics including FIFA president Gianni Infantino and World Cup privatization, alongside noting that a scar left from his time at Real Madrid had healed. In a pre-Fulham press conference at Cobham, Alonso took a more reserved tone when asked about midfielder Enzo Fernandez's £120 million valuation.
With no European football scheduled this season, Chelsea are working to complete player sales and loans to trim the squad. To maintain training standards, Alonso has split squad sessions into two groups, separating his core matchday squad from players deemed surplus to requirements. Chelsea will remain in London for their opening fixtures before travelling to face Everton in October.
