Cristiano Ronaldo faces ban after requesting FPF penalty

Cristiano Ronaldo faces a potential suspension of between one and six months after requesting that the Portuguese Football Federation sanction him following an incident at a national team training camp.

The Portugal captain released a long statement sharing his version of the events that occurred during the national squad gathering. In the document, Ronaldo asked that the national governing body apply a punishment to him that corresponds directly to the gravity of what took place.

The Disciplinary Regulations of the Portuguese Football Federation, known as the FPF, lay down clear penalties for international players who fail to meet squad obligations during official training camps or matches.

Federation disciplinary rules

Under the terms of the federation regulations, any player who has been regularly called up and subsequently abandons or fails to attend training, a match, or any national team activity without justification is sanctioned with a suspension ranging from one to six months.

The rules state that professional players are additionally subject to a financial penalty of between 5 and 10 accounting units. With each accounting unit fixed at 102 euros, the additional fine ranges from approximately 500 to 1,000 euros.

The regulation also mandates immediate action upon any breach of duty. Section two of Article 160 of the FPF Disciplinary Regulations states that any unauthorized absence or abandonment results in an automatic preventive suspension for the player.

National team context

Ronaldo is the team captain of the Portugal national side, commonly known as the Seleção Nacional. The national team represents the country in international fixtures, with players summoned by the federation for official squad gatherings and tournament preparations.

The FPF is the governing body for association football in Portugal. It manages all national representative teams and enforces strict disciplinary codes across all activities connected to Portuguese sports representation.

In Portuguese administrative and regulatory law, an accounting unit is a standardized financial index used to calculate legal and administrative fines. The federation regulations apply this metric to determine monetary sanctions for professional players.

The automatic preventive suspension specified under Article 160 takes effect immediately while the Portuguese Football Federation evaluates the circumstances under its established disciplinary guidelines.
