The report suggests the situation for the Swiss official, who has held the position since 2016, has become extremely difficult. Infantino is said to already be facing strong pressure to step down, with a possible emergency meeting of FIFA now on the table to address the developments.
World Cup rights plan and UEFA's reaction
Infantino, 56, was the architect of a plan to hand FIFA's rights to private investors, a move that would have touched the World Cup itself.
The plan triggered strong reactions, particularly from UEFA, forcing Infantino to retreat. His plan is not moving forward, and the crisis within FIFA's ranks appears to be greater than at any point in the last decade.
Reuters reported on 1 August that the retreat over the World Cup rights proposal was seen as a blow to Infantino's bid for re-election. In a separate report published the same day, Infantino said he had not wanted to cause division as he backed away from and withdrew the plan to sell off World Cup rights following the fierce reactions it provoked.
