Greece has roughly a 60 percent chance of securing tenth place in the UEFA country coefficient rankings this season, according to UEFA Media Consultant Andreas Dimatos.
Speaking on The Football Show by Stoiximan on protothema.gr, Dimatos said national representative teams can bridge the current points gap with the Czech Republic despite facing recent operational difficulties and setbacks.
He highlighted the absence of PAOK from European group stage action as a major blow to the overall ranking effort. Known as the Double-headed Eagle of the North, PAOK has been the second largest contributor of points to the Greek national tally in recent years, trailing only Olympiacos.
Chances in European club competitions
Dimatos identified Panathinaikos as the critical barometer for Greek football during the remainder of the European campaign. He explained that the additional points Panathinaikos can accumulate in the UEFA Conference League will play a decisive role in determining whether Greece can climb into the top ten.
He also expressed optimism regarding Olympiacos, noting that the red-and-whites have a significant opportunity to execute a strong run in the UEFA Europa League and earn valuable points toward the overall national coefficient.
Understanding UEFA coefficient rankings
The UEFA country coefficient is a ranking system used by European football's governing body to determine the number of qualification slots and direct entry places allocated to each national association in continental club competitions. Points are earned by clubs winning or drawing matches in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Conference League, with total points divided by the number of participating clubs from that country.
Reaching tenth position in the coefficient standings is a major target for European leagues because it typically carries significant rewards for domestic competition, including automatic group stage entry into top-level European tournaments for the national league champion.
Greek contenders in Europe
Olympiacos and Panathinaikos are based in Athens and rank among the most successful clubs in Greek football history. Olympiacos achieved major European success in recent years, while Panathinaikos has a long tradition of competing in continental tournaments. PAOK, based in Thessaloniki, has consistently qualified for European competitions in recent seasons, making its absence from the main stage a notable factor in Greece's overall calculations.
The battle for tenth spot will depend on the upcoming matchday performances in both the Europa League and the Conference League, as Greek representatives attempt to outscore their Czech counterparts across the remainder of the season.
