Hull City Beat Manchester United 2-0 on Tzolakis Debut

Hull City defeated Manchester United 2-0 at a sold-out stadium in their Premier League opener, driven by a Player of the Match performance from debutant goalkeeper Konstantis Tzolakis.

Goals from Ajayi and Mendy in the first half provided the decisive advantage for the hosts, while Tzolakis produced several outstanding saves to keep a clean sheet.

Hull City had announced a sold-out crowd long in advance of their opening league fixture. Tzolakis responded early to the home atmosphere, demonstrating sharp reflexes in the 13th minute to parry a powerful strike from Mbeumo with his hand.

The home side capitalized on their early momentum in the 17th minute when Ajayi scored with a shot from inside the penalty area. Mendy doubled the lead in the 38th minute with a header, shocking Manchester United before the end of the first half.

Second Half Pressure

Michael Carrick's Manchester United side pressed for a way back into the contest after the interval, but they struggled to create clear opportunities against Hull's defensive setup for much of the second half.

United finally created a major opportunity in the 78th minute when Mbeumo ran behind the defence and struck a powerful shot toward the bottom left corner. Tzolakis launched himself to his left and turned the ball away with his left hand to preserve the lead.

Tzolakis completed his clean sheet in the 89th minute by securely holding an angled effort from Bruno Fernandes directed toward his right corner.

Player of the Match Award

Following the final whistle, the Premier League named the Greek international goalkeeper as the official Player of the Match, capping his first appearance on English soil.

The performance followed his recent transfer to Hull City on August 5, 2026, when he signed a contract running through 2031.

Hull City compete in the Premier League, the top tier of English football, while Manchester United are one of the most decorated clubs in English football history.
