Hull City Stun Manchester United 2-0 at MKM Stadium

Hull City produced a dominant performance to defeat Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on the opening day of the new season.

First-half goals from centre-backs Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy earned the newly promoted hosts a deserved victory over Michael Carrick's side.

Hull City were widely predicted to suffer immediate relegation back to the Championship, but Sergej Jakirovic's squad controlled the match from the opening whistle. Manchester United entered the fixture with high hopes for the new campaign, yet their optimism was extinguished during a difficult 90 minutes. Daily Mail Sport reporter Nathan Salt was at the stadium to evaluate both teams.

Early Hull Pressure and Defensive Openings

Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens earned a 7/10 rating after standing firm during early pressure. Lammens parried a powerful header from Oli McBurnie 15 minutes into the match and tipped over a dangerous attempt from Ryan Giles a minute later. He made every effort to keep out a chaotic set-piece in the 17th minute before Semi Ajayi scored the opening goal for Hull City.

Noussair Mazraoui received a 4/10 rating after being preferred at right-back over Diogo Dalot. The defender struggled to contain Giles, who delivered crosses without challenge throughout the game. Mazraoui offered little going forward and failed to clear effectively during the opening goal.

Harry Maguire was rated 6/10 as the strongest performer in United's defensive line. Although he lost sight of Ajayi during the set-piece leading to the first goal, Maguire repelled aerial attacks with headers and made forward runs to open up play, though static team-mates limited his impact.

Michael Carrick's side never showed up and he left with more questions than answers

Physical Tunnel Battles and Defensive Tactics

Ayden Heaven recorded a 4.5/10 rating after enduring a difficult afternoon against experienced striker Oli McBurnie. The physical duel between the two players grew heated and spilled over as both teams walked down the tunnel at half-time. Heaven gained tough experience against McBurnie's physical approach.

Luke Shaw earned a 6/10 rating while operating high up the pitch as part of United's tactical 4-2-4 pressing system out of possession. The positioning left space behind the defense for Hull to exploit. Shaw pushed into forward positions regularly, but his final delivery lacked targets due to United's height disadvantage in the penalty area.

Midfield Overrun and Disappointing Attackers

Andrey Santos was rated 4/10 after failing to replicate his pre-season form. The midfielder was unable to establish a physical presence in central areas and was left covering excessive space across the pitch.

Youri Tielemans received a 4/10 rating alongside Santos. Tielemans showed brief moments of passing range, but lacked the quick movement needed to increase United's tempo as Hull ran past the central midfield pair.

Bryan Mbeumo earned a 4.5/10 rating after testing Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis with two smart saves, one in each half. However, the winger was caught watching the ball in the buildup to Hull's opening goal.

Bruno Fernandes was scored 5/10 after starting in an advanced attacking position. When United fell 2-0 behind, Fernandes was moved back into the deeper quarterback role previously used by Ruben Amorim, but he was unable to inspire a comeback.

Dorgu Struggling, Managerial Ratings, and Substitutes

Patrick Dorgu recorded the lowest rating of the match with a 3/10. Deployed on the left wing under Carrick rather than at left-back, Dorgu received a booking, ran into central congestion, and missed a scoring opportunity from a Maguire cross before being substituted at half-time.

Matheus Cunha was rated 4.5/10 while playing as a central striker while Benjamin Sesko built up match fitness. Cunha's fluid movement created early chances and a brilliant through ball for Mbeumo, but United struggled without a permanent central focal point.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick received a 4/10 rating after suffering back-to-back defeats against teams operating a five-man defensive system. Carrick made tactical changes, but his adjustments failed to alter the match momentum.

Marcus Rashford came on for Dorgu at half-time and earned a 6/10 rating. Kobbie Mainoo replaced Tielemans in the 67th minute and received a 6/10 rating, while Benjamin Sesko replaced Santos in the 67th minute for a 5/10 rating. Diogo Dalot replaced Mazraoui and Shea Lacey came on for Cunha in the 80th minute.

Complete Hull City Squad Performance and Ratings

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic earned a 9/10 rating for his tactical setup in a 3-4-2-1 formation. Centre-back Semi Ajayi scored the opening goal in the 17th minute and received an 8/10 rating before being replaced by Scott McNair (6/10) in the 64th minute. Fellow centre-back Nobel Mendy scored the second goal in the 38th minute for a 7/10 rating before making way for Herrington (7/10) in the 64th minute. Defender John Egan scored a 7/10 rating.

Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis earned a 7.5/10 rating for making key saves to preserve the clean sheet. Midfielder Regan Slater was rated 8/10, while Ryan Giles earned a 7.5/10 before being substituted for Matt Targett in the 85th minute. Lewie Coyle scored 6/10 before being replaced by Cody Drameh (6/10) in the 70th minute, and Matt Crooks scored 6/10 in central midfield.

In attack, Oli McBurnie received a 7/10 rating for leading the forward line, while Mohamed Belloumi received a 6/10 rating. Will Stroud scored 6/10 before being replaced by Liam Millar (6/10) in the 70th minute as Hull completed a 2-0 victory.
