Real Betis attacker Isco made UEFA Champions League history on Tuesday by becoming the first footballer to play in the competition for five different clubs from the same country.
The 34-year-old Spaniard achieved the milestone during his side's 3-2 away victory against French club Lille at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium on September 8, 2026, marking his return to Europe's premier tournament after nearly two seasons away.
Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini named Isco in the starting lineup for the group match. By stepping onto the pitch in France, the midfielder officially entered the record books of the UEFA Champions League as the sole player to represent five distinct teams from a single nation.
Along with his new appearance record, Isco already stands in second place overall for the most Champions League titles won by an individual player, sharing that position with several other decorated footballers after lifting the trophy five times during his career.
Wearing the captain's armband for Real Betis, Isco said following the match that being able to achieve the record with the club as captain was a double source of pride for him.
Comeback victory against Lille
The personal achievement was capped by a dramatic team performance on the pitch. Real Betis fell behind twice during the match, trailing 1-0 and later 2-1 against Lille, before staging a full recovery to claim a 3-2 win on French soil.
The victory at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium gave the Spanish team an opening win in the tournament, completing a night where Isco's milestone coincided with a hard-fought outcome for Pellegrini's side.
Sixteen years in European football
Born Francisco Román Alarcón Suárez in the town of Benalmádena, the player became globally recognized under his moniker Isco. His journey in European club competition began sixteen years prior to his record-setting night in France.
Having joined the youth academy of Valencia at the age of 14, the young attacker was handed his Champions League debut in September 2010 as an 18-year-old. During that 2010 season, Valencia advanced to the round of 16 before being knocked out of the competition by German side Schalke.
From Valencia to Real Madrid titles
Two years after his debut, Isco took the next step in his European career by leading Málaga into the main draw of the Champions League in 2012. Málaga secured their group stage spot by eliminating Greek club Panathinaikos in the play-off round, eventually advancing all the way to the quarter-finals.
His impressive performances earned him a high-profile transfer to Real Madrid in 2013. During a nine-year tenure in the Spanish capital running from 2013 to 2022, Isco enjoyed the most successful period of his career, celebrating five Champions League titles with the club.
Return to Andalusia with Sevilla and Betis
In the summer of 2022, Isco returned to the southern Spanish region of Andalusia by signing with Sevilla. His time at Sevilla included further appearances in the Champions League, adding a fourth Spanish club to his European resume.
