Jose Mourinho suffered the first defeat of his second spell as Real Madrid manager as his side were beaten 1-0 by Real Betis, with Kylian Mbappe missing a last-minute penalty.
Real Madrid had won three consecutive league matches to begin the season following Mourinho's high-profile return to the club, before the defeat brought that run to an end.
Parrott scores the winner
The defeat came at the hands of one of Mourinho's former players in Troy Parrott, who the Portuguese coach gave his Premier League debut to in 2019 while in charge of Tottenham Hotspur.
Parrott, who joined Real Betis in a £17million summer move, scored on the rebound in the 80th minute after Nelson Deossa's header from a corner had been saved by Thibaut Courtois.
Disallowed goal
Mourinho, who was booked in the 54th minute, thought his side had levelled in the closing stages when a superb acrobatic volley from Espi, set up by a Vinicius Jnr cross, was ruled out after VAR adjudged the forward to be offside.
Mbappe's penalty miss
Real Madrid were then given the chance to preserve their unbeaten start to the campaign when they were awarded a stoppage-time penalty after a foul on Vinicius.
Mbappe was denied from the spot by a diving save from goalkeeper Alvaro Valles, who then squared up to and pushed the Real Madrid forward as he celebrated the stop.
Footage showed the penalty should have been retaken after a Real Betis player encroached into the box as Mbappe struck the ball.
Mourinho's reaction
Mourinho insisted after the match that his side had deserved to win, while sarcastically congratulating Betis and suggesting their players had been "smarter" in committing fouls, after five Real Madrid players were booked.
"Congrats to Betis, they won the lottery tonight. The game was all Real Madrid, we created so many chances, if we drew tonight, we would have been disappointed."
"I might change my mind tomorrow, but today, judging by the feeling on the bench, I don't know why we lost because collectively we played very well," he said. "I have nothing to reproach any player for regarding their attitude. We deserved to win, but deserving doesn't get you points."
He added: "Betis players are smarter than Real Madrid players, who are more straightforward. In the first play of the game, there was a clear yellow card for a player who fouled Valverde, but Fede stays on his feet, he doesn't even fall. Meanwhile Betis players exaggerated every foul so much, that you'd think they need an ambulance from their reactions."
On his own booking, Mourinho said: "I don't know why I saw a yellow card. I accept it. I stood up because a Betis player looked like he'd died in front of the bench. I saw a lot of people frustrated with the plays, but I didn't see it myself and I can't comment."
What it means for the title race
The result gives rivals Barcelona the chance to establish an early three-point lead over Real Madrid in LaLiga, with the Catalan club looking to clinch a third successive league title.
