Julian Alvarez has warned Atletico Madrid that he will not report for training on August 10 as he pushes for a transfer to FC Barcelona.
The Argentine forward made his intention clear through his agent, Fernando Hidalgo, who formally notified the club leadership on Wednesday morning. The decision has sparked an internal crisis at the Madrid club, where executives are now considering selling the player.
Hidalgo communicated the ultimatum to Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin and the club board, as well as FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sports director Deco. Journalist Juan Jesus, a transfer specialist, revealed the development on social media.
The decision came after Atletico Madrid granted Alvarez three weeks of vacation following his participation in the World Cup. The club expected the striker to return to training on August 10, but his agent confirmed he will not appear.
Barcelona Strategy Summit
Deco and Joao Amaral traveled to Madrid for an imminent summit with Hidalgo to plan their transfer strategy. According to a report by Jijantes, the meeting could occur on Wednesday in a discreet setting away from media attention in the Spanish capital.
Signing Alvarez remains the main priority for the sports management at FC Barcelona, who are determined to exhaust every option to complete the deal. The latest move has forced Atletico officials to reconsider their stance after initially being left shocked and confused by the standoff.
Gil Marin and the Atletico board have gradually begun opening the door to a potential sale to their league rivals. The escalation follows months of tension over the player's future in Madrid.
World Cup Departure Request
Alvarez had already expressed his desire to leave Atletico Madrid during the World Cup. At the tournament, he said it was not the right time to speak about his future, but noted that he could not hide. He added that he tried to be an honest person and had already spoken with club representatives and those he needed to consult.
The forward stated at the time that he believed a transfer would be the best outcome for all parties because he wanted to fulfill his dream. Manager Diego Simeone has praised the striker, saying Alvarez has been the best footballer at Atletico since he joined the club.
Alvarez, known as La Arana, joined Atletico Madrid in 2024 after previously helping Argentina finish as World Cup runners-up. He has made 106 appearances for the club, recording 49 goals and 17 assists.
Despite his strong statistical performance, Alvarez remains determined to push for a move until Atletico can no longer sustain the pressure. Negotiations between Barcelona and Atletico are expected to intensify as the August 10 training deadline approaches.
