Ferran Torres has left his Barcelona future uncertain, saying the club will have to show him he is wanted if he is to renew his contract, as Paris Saint-Germain push to sign him before the end of the week.
The Spain forward, who emerged as one of Spanish football's leading attacking players after the World Cup, has become one of the central figures of the current transfer market. His departure from Barcelona has gained momentum because he has no guarantee of a starting role under coach Hansi Flick, who wants a different type of striker and has identified Julian Alvarez as a target.
Torres does not plan to renew his contract, which runs until June 2027, without assurances that he will keep his place in the starting eleven. He opened the door to a transfer in an interview with NBC's Today Show, saying he still has ties to Barcelona but is weighing his options to make the right decision about his career. Barcelona's leadership reportedly prefers to authorize an immediate sale rather than risk losing him for nothing once his contract runs out.
What Torres said about his future
In the interview, Torres acknowledged that anything can change in football. He said he currently has a contract with Barcelona but that in football you never really know what will happen, and that he is waiting to make the right decision.
Asked whether he has a dream club, Torres declined to name one, but said his dream is to be happy, a response that has drawn attention from fans.
PSG talks and a deleted social media message
PSG executives and Barcelona's sporting management are expected to hold video meetings before Friday, August 7, 2026. PSG wants to finalize a transfer fee, still to be agreed between the two clubs, so Torres can join the French club's preseason before official competitions begin.
Many consider his exit already decided after a social media message, reported by Sportico, that he later deleted. In the post, Torres challenged Barcelona directly, saying that regarding a renewal the club would have to show him they want him, and on PSG's interest he added that it is always good when clubs like that want you, a response that stirred controversy.
The comments spread quickly despite being taken down within minutes and caused unease among Barcelona supporters.
The clause behind a possible exit
PSG is working to accelerate the signing and is counting on a clause that could ease his departure. One reason Barcelona may be willing to sell is a contractual clause requiring the club to pay Manchester City an additional bonus of about 8 million euros if Torres renews his contract before it expires in 2027. According to The Athletic, Barcelona is reluctant to pay that amount, which combined with a new contract would push the cost of keeping him too high.
Barcelona signed Torres in January 2022 for 55 million euros plus 10 million euros in variables that have been met over his time at the club, bringing the total to 65 million euros, on top of the renewal bonus due from 2027.
Atletico Madrid and PSG, managed by Luis Enrique, are both reportedly ready to welcome him, with PSG wanting to close the deal this week.
Salary comparison
Torres currently earns 10 million euros a year at Barcelona, equivalent to 833,000 euros a month, 194,000 euros a week or 28,000 euros a day. PSG is reportedly willing to raise that to 14 million euros a year.
