An explosive dressing room argument between Pep Guardiola and Kyle Walker that spelt the end of the defender's Manchester City career has been captured on camera. The 96-cap England international left the Etihad Stadium on loan for AC Milan in January 2025 following a dramatic breakdown in relations with his manager.

Walker's tumultuous exit brought an end to eight years at Manchester City. The departure came during the club's worst run of form under Guardiola, driven by a steady accumulation of friction between the manager and his team captain.

Walker joined Manchester City in 2017 from Tottenham Hotspur and established himself as one of the Premier League's premier right-backs. Though voted club skipper by his teammates for the season, the veteran defender opted to move to Italy mid-campaign after relations with Guardiola deteriorated.

Anfield Defeat Triggers Dressing Room Clash

The beginning of the end for Walker occurred following a defeat against Liverpool at Anfield in early December. In scenes featured in the upcoming Prime Video documentary series A Beautiful Obsession, Guardiola is shown dissecting a Liverpool goal that stemmed from a defensive error.

During the match analysis, central defender Ruben Dias lost possession before Walker recovered the ball. However, the right-back was then dispossessed himself as Liverpool winger Luis Diaz skipped past him to win a penalty.

Guardiola insisted in front of the team that Walker should have known that losing the ball in that area would result in a goal. Walker immediately disputed his manager's assessment in front of the entire squad.

"I react to someone," Walker retorted, prompting Guardiola to sigh: "You don't understand, Kyle."

Captain Defends Performances in Tense Exchange

A visibly agitated Walker, slouched on the dressing room floor while teammates sat on benches, launched into an intense defence of his performances. He claimed that Guardiola singled him out repeatedly during squad meetings.

"If you keep saying my name in every meeting, in every f***ing thing, then it is going to be impossible, you're going to get a reaction," Walker said. "Every f***ing meeting, it's my name."

Guardiola countered that Walker was highlighted due to his senior status in the squad, arguing that experienced leaders must handle public constructive criticism. But Walker rejected the explanation, alleging that Guardiola had never backed his appointment as captain.

"You didn't want me to be captain," Walker said. "You didn't want me to be your captain. I've reacted to someone else [Dias]. I've lost the ball. You somehow bring my name into it."

Guardiola Changes Captaincy Rules After Departure

Walker left the club just weeks later. After struggling during his loan spell with Serie A side AC Milan, the defender subsequently signed for Burnley and currently plays in the Championship.

Following Walker's six-month tenure as captain, Guardiola abandoned Manchester City's long-standing policy of allowing squad members to vote on their team captain.

Before a victory over Chelsea at the end of January, Guardiola held a team talk where he addressed the squad about Walker's departure, using the former captain as an example of how not to act during difficult moments.

"I'm incredibly sad about what happened with Kyle," Guardiola shouted to the team. "It was so easy for him - f***ing hell - it was so easy for him to come to me [and say] 'I'm done'."

"But he did not behave as a captain to do it," Guardiola added. "He knows we are in the toughest moment of our lives. We bought you, we have to defend ourselves. We have to say here we are going to die together."

Documentary Charts Guardiola's Etihad Era

The exchange is revealed in A Beautiful Obsession, a five-part series by Jack Gaughan charting Guardiola's decade at Manchester City and his final two seasons at the Etihad Stadium. The documentary details his early struggles over pitch conditions and squad discipline, the tactical innovations behind City's Treble triumph, his player relationships, and his eventual contract extension decision.

A Beautiful Obsession launches exclusively on Prime Video in the UK and Ireland on 19 August 2026.
