Colombian striker Luis Suárez will start for Sporting CP against Alverca on Saturday at 20:30, replacing injured teammate Fotis Ioannidis.

According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, Suárez aims to rebuild his relationship with supporters and return to the scoresheet after facing criticism from fans.

Injury Management For Fotis Ioannidis

Ioannidis was sidelined after experiencing physical discomfort in his lower back. Sporting manager Rui Borges is managing the Greek forward's workload cautiously to avoid a longer period on the sidelines.

Ioannidis has scored two goals and provided two assists in two matches this season, performance statistics that had earned him the starting spot ahead of Suárez.

Squad Tension And Training Walkout

Suárez has struggled with his role on the bench and has openly displayed his frustration. The forward became isolated from the squad and stopped communicating with several teammates, who accused him of a breach of trust.

The rift followed news that Suárez was featured as an electoral asset by a presidential candidate at Turkish club Fenerbahçe. Relations further deteriorated when Suárez walked out of a training session prior to a 2-2 draw against Estrela da Amadora upon learning he would not start. Borges intercepted the player on his way to the dressing room and tried unsuccessfully to downplay the incident.

Discontent also spilled over onto social media, where Suárez published biblical passages suggesting a desire to leave the club. Those online posts have since stopped, and observers note that his focus has returned to the team.

Rebuilding Fan Support And Goal Record

Suárez is now working to win back Sporting supporters, who whistled and booed him during both pre-match warm-ups and after he came on as a substitute in a 3-2 victory over Vitória de Guimarães.

The Colombian striker delivered an outstanding campaign last season, scoring 38 goals and providing seven assists across 53 appearances in all competitions. He finished as the top scorer in the Portuguese league with 28 goals.

His scoring form made him one of the team's most vital players and helped cushion the impact when Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres left the Lisbon club to join English Premier League side Arsenal.
