Greek forward Fotis Ioannidis has suffered physical discomfort and is expected to yield his starting spot to Luis Suárez in Sporting CP's match against FC Alverca at the Estádio José Alvalade on Saturday at 8:30 pm.
The Greek international striker has been working in the gym to manage his physical condition, though he will still be included in the matchday squad for the fixture. Sporting's medical team are taking no risks with Ioannidis after he spent an extended period on the sidelines last season due to a left knee injury.
Ioannidis has been a key figure in Sporting's attack during the opening games of the season, recording two goals and two assists across two matches. He scored in a 2-2 draw against Estrela da Amadora and registered another goal in a 3-2 victory over Vitória de Guimarães.
Selection competition and striker management
The forward's strong form has justified his place in the starting line-up, creating competition with Colombian striker Luis Suárez. Sporting manager Rui Borges has been handling the positional battle between the two forwards carefully as both compete for the primary striking role.
Borges chose to substitute Ioannidis for Suárez in the 60th minute during the draw against Estrela da Amadora. In the subsequent match against Vitória de Guimarães, the manager introduced Suárez in the 66th minute while keeping Ioannidis on the pitch.
With the coaching staff managing Ioannidis's workload, Suárez is set to return to the starting line-up for Saturday's home game.
Postponements and squad updates in Portuguese football
In other Portuguese top-flight news, the match between Sporting Clube de Braga and Gil Vicente FC has been postponed following a gastrointestinal outbreak affecting the Braga squad.
Sporting have also added to their attacking options with the arrival of new signing Nestory Irankunda. Upon joining the club, the forward described himself as a powerful and fast player who possesses a high vertical jump.
The Lisbon club enters Saturday's match following a hard-fought 3-2 home win over Vitória de Guimarães, where Sporting held on for victory despite late pressure from the visitors.
Sporting CP, known as Os Leões, are based in Lisbon and play their home matches at the Estádio José Alvalade. The club competes in the Primeira Liga, Portugal's top football division, and is one of the country's major football institutions.
