Manchester City earned a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, while Brighton recorded a 4-0 win against Aston Villa.
Marcus Tavernier put Bournemouth ahead in the 26th minute before Marc Guehi equalised in the 84th minute and Josko Gvardiol struck in the second minute of stoppage time to complete the comeback for the champions.
Brighton delivered a dominant performance against Unai Emery's Aston Villa, scoring four first-half goals before Villa midfielder Joao Gomes was sent off before the interval.
Manchester City Comeback at Etihad Stadium
Manchester City were forced to fight back against a well-organised Bournemouth side that took the lead midway through the first half. Marcus Tavernier capitalised on his opportunity in the 26th minute, finishing cleanly to put the visitors ahead and stun the home crowd at the Etihad Stadium.
The hosts applied heavy pressure throughout the remainder of the match in search of an equaliser. The breakthrough arrived in the 84th minute when defender Marc Guehi scored to bring Manchester City level at 1-1.
City continued to attack in additional time, and in the second minute of stoppage time, Josko Gvardiol scored the winning goal to complete the 2-1 turn-around.
Brighton Win Against Ten-Man Aston Villa
Brighton took early control of their fixture against Aston Villa with an explosive opening half. Villa defender Victor Lindelof turned the ball into his own net in the eighth minute to give Brighton an early lead.
Maxim De Cuyper doubled the advantage ten minutes later, scoring in the 18th minute. Jack Hinshelwood then extended the lead with two goals in quick succession, scoring in the 30th and 31st minutes to make it 4-0.
Aston Villa's night worsened in the 40th minute when Joao Gomes received a red card, leaving Unai Emery's side with ten players. Brighton managed the remainder of the match and brought on substitute Charalampos Kostoulas in the 64th minute.
Premier League Matchday One Results
In other opening-weekend fixtures, Arsenal secured a 3-0 home victory against Coventry City. Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute, Bukayo Saka added a second in the 23rd minute, and Martin Odegaard rounded off the win in the 49th minute.
Hull City earned a 2-0 victory over Manchester United, with Semi Ajayi opening the scoring in the 17th minute and Mendy scoring the second goal in the 38th minute.
Brentford defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-0, courtesy of goals from Keane Lewis-Potter in the 12th minute, Vitaly Janelt in the 33rd minute, and Kayode in the 49th minute.
Everton won 2-0 against Crystal Palace following goals from Kieran Dewsbury-Hall in the 42nd minute and Barry in the 53rd minute.
Ipswich Town claimed a 2-1 win over Sunderland. Emerson opened the scoring for Ipswich in the 24th minute before Angulo equalised for Sunderland in the 39th minute, but Jack Clarke scored a 90th-minute winner for Ipswich.
Leeds United earned a 1-0 away victory at Nottingham Forest through an 88th-minute goal from Anton Stach.
