Manchester City player Jeremy Doku has signed a new five-year contract as the club futureproofs its squad under new boss Enzo Maresca. The agreement forms part of an ongoing effort to secure key players for the post-Pep Guardiola era.
Doku joins Josko Gvardiol, Phil Foden and Abdukodir Khusanov in agreeing fresh terms over the past fortnight. City leaders view the quartet as cornerstone figures following the departures of long-serving stalwarts Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez.
Defender Gvardiol and Doku are both 24 years old, while Foden is 26 and Khusanov is 22. Director of football Hugo Viana and Maresca identified the group to establish exacting standards and maintain consistent trophy success.
Leadership changes and squad experience
City face potential disruption to their four-man leadership group as midfielder Rodri attracts transfer interest from Spain. Barcelona has joined Real Madrid in competing for the signature of the midfielder, who was crowned best player at the World Cup.
Losing Rodri would cut City's leadership group in half following recent departures. Maresca addressed the team's lack of real experience during a stifling week of pre-season work in Seoul.

Midfielder Nico Gonzalez expressed a desire to remain at City despite failing to start a single league match between January and May. The player arrived for £50 million 18 months ago and was left off the bench for the FA Cup final victory.
"I'm happy here," Gonzalez said. "I don't want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. If we win, I'm happy. My dream is to win trophies."
"If I don't play any matches and we win the Champions League next year, I will be so happy," Gonzalez added. "The final of the FA Cup I was not picked but we won so it was an amazing day for me. To be honest, last season I couldn't have expected to have played almost 30 matches in the starting XI. I played really good. I've had many opportunities."
Transfer targets and squad departures
While Gonzalez remains subject to potential offers, teammate Tijjani Reijnders is more likely to leave before the transfer window closes. Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United are monitoring the Dutch midfielder, who is valued at £55 million.

"I don't think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches," Gonzalez said. "We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position. Despite Gonzalez discussing previous league titles, he has not won a title, and only five squad members remain from the Treble-winning side. The transition reflects three seasons of squad reconstruction following two years of planning for life after Guardiola.
