FC Barcelona Target Manchester City Midfielder Rodri

FC Barcelona is considering a move for Manchester City defensive midfielder Rodri after holding talks with his management over potential transfer terms, according to The Athletic. Sources close to the negotiations said discussions took place anonymously to protect working relationships.

The 30-year-old Spanish international has been linked with a return to his homeland for some time. Real Madrid has also shown strong interest in the midfielder, who won the 2026 World Cup with Spain and was named the best player of the tournament.

Barcelona is seeking a defensive midfielder after Frenkie de Jong tore the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, ruling him out for several weeks. The playing style at Barcelona appeals to Rodri, who has won all major trophies with Spain and Manchester City.

Transfer Conditions and Rival Interest

A move to Barcelona would reunite Rodri with eight of his World Cup-winning teammates. The Spanish champions already feature eight players from Spain's winning squad: Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres.

Barcelona must sell players and clear roster space before finalizing any transfer to satisfy financial requirements. Meanwhile, Real Madrid remains in pursuit and is expected to reach individual terms quickly with the player.

Negotiations with Manchester City could prove difficult because new manager Enzo Maresca views Rodri as an important part of his plans. However, Rodri has a contract running until the end of June next year, allowing him to speak with other clubs independently starting in January 2027 unless he signs an extension.

Rodri has played for Manchester City since 2019, making 298 appearances with 28 goals and 32 assists. He developed in the youth system at Atletico Madrid before playing for Villarreal from 2015 to 2018 and returning to Atletico Madrid for the 2018-19 season.
