Manchester City have until 5pm on Friday to complete a £120 million deal for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez as manager Enzo Maresca pursues a reunion.
Relations between the two Premier League clubs remain strained following Maresca's departure from Chelsea. The Italian manager resigned from Stamford Bridge in January with his heart set on taking over at the Etihad Stadium, before Chelsea released a scathing statement in June confirming a compensation agreement to replace Pep Guardiola while refusing to refer to Maresca by name.
If Manchester City agree to pay the £120 million asking price set by Chelsea, they will acquire a player known as much for his volatile temperament as his technical ability.
Fernandez was sent off in a World Cup final and attempted to get his Chelsea teammate Marc Cucurella sent off for Argentina in that same match. The midfielder was frequently booked for dissent throughout the season and provoked England supporters by cupping his ears after scoring an equaliser in the World Cup semi-final.
He was also accused of racism by his own Chelsea teammates after live-streaming a video of himself and international teammates chanting following Argentina's Copa America victory two years ago in 2024.
Despite the 2024 racism controversy, Maresca immediately handed Fernandez the captain's armband for Chelsea's Premier League season opener against Manchester City, demonstrating his complete trust in the Argentine international.
Maresca recently joked that striker Erling Haaland could not serve as Manchester City captain because the manager requires his skipper to sprint to the touchline after every goal for updated tactical instructions, unless the captain scored the goal himself. At Chelsea, Maresca routinely summoned Fernandez to the touchline after goals even when club captain Reece James was present on the pitch.
Chelsea statistics and work rate
Fernandez proved central to Chelsea's midfield during Maresca's 18-month tenure in West London. Although Chelsea finished rock bottom in the Premier League for total distance covered by players last season, Fernandez ranked inside the top 10 individual players across the entire division.
No player featured in more Premier League matches for Chelsea than Fernandez during Maresca's 18 months in charge. Across the entire top flight over that period, only Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United created more chances from open play.
Manchester City's pursuit of Fernandez comes as Barcelona conduct advanced talks to bring Spanish international Rodri back to his homeland. Rodri has served as the most influential midfielder in City's recent history and is widely regarded as the most reliable metronome in world football.
To rebuild the midfield without Rodri, City have already completed a £116 million transfer for Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. The club are also in negotiations to sign 18-year-old Moroccan international Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for £85 million, bringing in a player recognized as a superb ball-winner and tidy distributor following his breakout performances at the World Cup.
Comparing Fernandez and Rodri
Adding Fernandez would bring total midfield spending past £300 million, though the Chelsea player is not a direct replacement for Rodri. While both midfielders exert immense authority on the pitch, Fernandez operates much closer to the opposition penalty area.
During his full 2024-25 season under Maresca at Chelsea, Fernandez was involved in 200 attacking sequences that resulted in a shot, either taking the shot, creating the chance, or building up the play. Nearly 60 per cent of those moves ended with Fernandez taking the shot or providing the key pass, and he ranked first among all Premier League midfielders for expected goals.
Across that campaign, Fernandez was involved in Chelsea's offensive play as frequently as any player other than Cole Palmer.
In contrast, during Rodri's peak 2023-24 season prior to his serious injury, the Spaniard led Manchester City for total attacking involvement, yet only 37 per cent of those moves resulted in a shot or chance created by him.
Rodri averaged more than double the number of passes per match compared to Fernandez in 2024-25, recording a significantly higher completion rate and delivering more than three times as many line-breaking passes through opposition defences.
Fernandez plays with greater directness, directing a higher percentage of his passes forward and into the penalty box while committing more fouls. One observer noted that Rodri functions like a dishwasher by keeping everything clean, whereas Fernandez smashes the dishes.
Penalty box runs and goalscoring
A key distinction between the two players is Fernandez's instinct for making late runs into the penalty area. While Rodri averages fewer than half a run into the box per game, Fernandez averages at least five, frequently producing goals in a style reminiscent of former Chelsea and City midfielder Frank Lampard.
Against Burnley in November, Fernandez demonstrated this movement when striker Marc Guiu drove into the penalty area. As Burnley defender Josh Cullen (24) focused on the ball, Fernandez sprinted past on Cullen's blind side to meet the cutback and score with a first-time strike.
In a match against Brighton, forward Joao Pedro dropped deep to draw defenders before the ball was moved out to right-back Reece James, allowing Fernandez to arrive late and score with a header from the resulting cross.
At the end of the 2024-25 season against Liverpool, Fernandez called for the ball from winger Pedro Neto, collected the cutback inside the area, took a touch, and scored.
Tactical shifts and transfer outlook
When Rodri was fully fit, former manager Guardiola deployed him as a single midfield pivot to allow creative players like Bernardo Silva freedom to advance. Without Rodri, City frequently shifted to a two-man central midfield.
Maresca adopted a two-man midfield during pre-season, lining up Mateo Kovacic in a deep holding role alongside Tijjani Reijnders in South Korea against Atletico Madrid.
Fernandez's tactical profile closely matches Reijnders, who appears set to complete a transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah. Heat maps reveal that both Fernandez and Reijnders prefer to operate in the channels.
Whether new signing Anderson starts in midfield against Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday remains to be seen.
Although Rodri demonstrated his world-class ability during the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, much of that tournament was played at a slower tempo due to high temperatures and altitude. The Premier League presents a more demanding environment where physical power has increasingly eclipsed midfield rhythm.
If Rodri departs for Barcelona, Maresca appears determined to reshape Manchester City's midfield around Fernandez, even if completing the overall midfield overhaul costs the club more than £300 million.
