Brazilian football star Marta has ruled out retiring before the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, confirming she remains eager to continue playing at age 40.
Speaking to Marie Claire, the six-time FIFA world player of the year dismissed talk of her leaving the pitch. Marta said she knows her limits and capacity better than anyone, explaining that she made sacrifices to play at her age because she still sees drive in her mind and body. She added that she will only stop when playing no longer makes sense.
World Cup ambitions
Marta, who has won three Olympic silver medals, said she dreams of winning the World Cup trophy next year. However, she said she lives one day at a time and does not lose sleep over the tournament or feel the weight of public expectations. She noted that her achievements pushed the sport into a promising position, so missing a World Cup medal does not frustrate her.
She said winning the tournament in Brazil would be extraordinary, adding she would trade all her individual titles for a team trophy for her teammates and country. Marta also emphasized her humility, stating she is not a pioneer but part of a continuation of thousands of athletes before her who planted the seeds for the sport.
