MicahJo Barnett, a 20-year-old running back for William Jewell College, died on Saturday after collapsing on the sideline immediately after scoring a touchdown during a season-opening game in Liberty, Missouri.
Paramedics from the Liberty Fire Department rushed to assist Barnett at around 12:20 p.m. before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No cause of death has yet been revealed.
Barnett collapsed during the first quarter of the game against Fort Lewis College, shortly after scoring a touchdown to give the William Jewell Cardinals a 7-0 lead. The game was suspended with 4:32 remaining in the opening quarter as teammates wept and comforted one another on the field.
According to Fox News KC, the running back suffered seizure-like symptoms on the sideline. Video footage posted to social media on Saturday showed Barnett running in his final score and celebrating with teammates moments before the emergency occurred.
Following the tragedy, an online fundraising campaign was established on GoFundMe to support Barnett's family with unexpected costs associated with his funeral and memorial services. By 2:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, donors had contributed more than $17,000 to the page.
The campaign was set up by a woman who described herself as a former youth coach and family friend of Barnett. "It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we ask for your help in honoring the life of Micah Jo. Micah was a talented and kind young man who was loved by so many," the page reads. "Just recently, he had the incredible moment of scoring a touchdown for his team. Micah’s life was taken far too soon, leaving his family, friends, teammates, and community heartbroken."
University statement and community tributes
William Jewell College issued an official statement mourning the loss of the student-athlete, who was a junior business administration student. "William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri community mourn the passing of Micah Jo Barnett, a junior business administration and member of Jewell Cardinal football program and former Liberty North Eagle," the school said.
The university added: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo's family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss." Sharing the news alongside a black-and-white graphic of Barnett, the school added the message: "Forever a Cardinal."
In response to the tragedy, college officials directed students and staff seeking guidance to campus support services. "Students and staff are encouraged to connect with Counseling Services and/or the office of the Chaplain who are ready to provide support to those who need it," the statement read.
Background on Barnett and the institutions
Barnett was a junior studying business administration at William Jewell College, a private liberal arts institution founded in 1849 and located in Liberty, Missouri, near Kansas City. Before joining the Jewell Cardinals football program, he competed locally for Liberty North High School as a Liberty North Eagle. His mother, Michelle, had previously shared a throwback photograph of him online in September 2024 to celebrate his 19th birthday.
William Jewell competes in NCAA Division II athletics, an intermediate division of college sports in the United States. The Cardinals were hosting Fort Lewis College, a public liberal arts college located in Durango, Colorado, for the opening match of the new season when the incident occurred.
Emergency medical care was provided by the Liberty Fire Department, which supplies municipal fire and emergency medical services to the city of Liberty. The fundraising effort for Barnett's family was launched on GoFundMe, a public crowdfunding platform widely used for personal emergency funds and memorial expenses.

University officials announced that a campus vigil would be held on the quad at 8:00 p.m. in honor of Barnett and his family. School officials noted that funeral arrangements will be shared when available.
