Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admitted he has been left shocked by the soaring transfer fees in this summer window, while hinting that 19-year-old midfielder Ethan Nwaneri could leave the north London club before the transfer deadline.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal's Community Shield match against Premier League rivals Manchester City on Sunday, the manager reflected on recent market inflation as his club continues to search for a marquee attacking addition to their squad.
Rising Transfer Fees
Transfer prices have escalated dramatically across European football during the current window. Forward Morgan Rogers, who was previously pursued by Arsenal, recently completed a move for a fee in excess of £100 million. Arsenal have remained reluctant to pay over the odds for star names, although they did bring in Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for £75 million following a protracted transfer saga.
The Gunners are still actively assessing the market for forward options to bolster their frontline. Galatasaray's Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen and Argentine forward Julian Alvarez have both been linked with potential moves to the Emirates Stadium.
Arteta acknowledged his surprise at the prices being commanded in the current market when asked if transfer valuations had caught him off guard. "Yes, it has," Arteta said. "I wouldn't bet on that to be fair. But that's the market. There are clubs that are happy to invest or they believe that the valuations of those players are that. And that's fair. At the end the value of the player is what somebody can pay for you and they've done it."
Ethan Nwaneri Future
Beyond incoming deals, Arteta also hinted that teenage prospect Nwaneri could be heading for the exit door in search of regular first-team minutes. The 19-year-old midfielder sat on the bench for French Ligue 1 side Marseille during the second half of last season and has recently been tracked by multiple clubs, including Turkish side Galatasaray.
Arteta praised the youngster's ability and attitude while acknowledging that keeping him without playing time would not benefit either party. "It's unquestionable the talent, the desire, the love and the passion he has for the game," Arteta said. "It's something that I've always loved about Ethan. I think he's had some great games and he's shown everybody that he has the ability to be here."
The manager stressed that Nwaneri's long-term career needs must be prioritized if he is to stay in north London. "I want him to be at the club but something that, in the medium-long term, is best for the player as well," Arteta said. "Ethan needs to play football and if he stays here it’s because we can guarantee that he can have those minutes. Otherwise it's just something that is not good for anybody I think."
