Newcastle United suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against Leeds United at Elland Road on Monday night, prompting former club striker Alan Shearer to label the team's first-half performance an "absolute s***show".
Manager Matthias Jaissle watched his side concede twice in the space of two minutes just past the half-hour mark before Dominic Calvert-Lewin added a third for Leeds moments before the break.
Noah Okafor extended the hosts' advantage in the 59th minute with a superb left-footed finish, before Newcastle summer signing Bazoumana Toure scored a late consolation goal.
The dismal first half infuriated Shearer, who posted his frustration on social media platform X as Newcastle went into the dressing room trailing 3-0.
"An absolute s***show from the Toon. 3-0 at HT is embarrassing," Shearer wrote at half-time.
Shearer is widely regarded as one of Newcastle's greatest players, having spent a decade at St James' Park. The former England striker remains the all-time leading goalscorer in Premier League history.
League standings and tactical struggles
The defeat at Elland Road marked Newcastle's first loss of the Premier League season. Jaissle's side had been unbeaten prior to the match but slipped to 12th place in the table with five points from their first four matches.
Leeds climbed to third in the table following the victory. Daniel Farke's side have made a strong start to their campaign, earning eight points from two wins and two draws.
Speaking after the match, Jaissle admitted his team failed to match the home side's work rate and physical play.
"Only one thing went wrong," the 38-year-old German manager said. "It was disappointing, definitely because we couldn't bring the fundamentals in football on to the pitch."
"Duel behaviour, the intensity of Leeds we couldn't match, and then you can see that it's going to be difficult to win a game in the Premier League," Jaissle added.
Squad overhaul and looking ahead
Newcastle entered the match during a period of transition following the end of the Eddie Howe era. The Magpies underwent major changes during the summer transfer window, spending around £265 million on new signings while receiving close to £248 million in player sales.
Jaissle stressed that inconsistent results were expected given the squad's young age profile and recent squad restructuring.
"I said to the lads, we were aware a couple of weeks ago, that with that young squad, we will have challenges," Jaissle said. "We will have ups and downs. Today it was a big down, a tough night with a heavy defeat."
Despite the setback, Jaissle insisted his team must focus on learning from the defeat as they prepare for their next match.
"But that's now exactly the way to learn out of it with a young squad," Jaissle said. "That's always the most important thing, that you show now the right reaction, and we can do that already on Saturday (against Hull City)."
