Newcastle United claimed a deserved 2-0 victory away at Tottenham Hotspur in North London, powered by second-half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa.
Former Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, who joined Tottenham in a £100 million move, was substituted 15 minutes from time to taunts from visiting fans, while his £50 million Newcastle replacement Nico Gonzalez delivered an outstanding performance on his debut.
Tonali was taken off in the 75th minute after failing to influence the match, with Tottenham needing better from their midfield. The Italian completed only 29 of his 36 attempted passes, sending seven astray. Gonzalez played a pivotal role before making way a few minutes ahead of Tonali to receive a rest following a disciplined and diligent Newcastle debut. The midfielder, signed from Manchester City, completed 48 of his 51 passes and provided the cross-field ball that initiated Newcastle's opening goal.
Anthony Elanga Opens the Scoring
Newcastle controlled territory and possession early in the match, but they failed to register a shot on target until the 62nd minute. That moment arrived when Gonzalez sprayed a pass across the field to Bosnian right back Amar Dedic, who teed up Elanga to strike past goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and the helpless Tottenham defence.
The goal marked Elanga's second in two matches this season, representing a stark contrast to his debut campaign at Newcastle. The £55 million winger, who arrived 12 months ago to solve the team's right-wing position, failed to score a single Premier League goal last season after missing a 30-second breakthrough opportunity against Aston Villa on opening day. Head coach Matthias Jaissle has brought intense energy to Newcastle since taking over from Jason Tindall. The German manager spent the match pacing outside his technical zone and shouting instructions along the touchline, instilling a sharp defensive bark and bite in his side.
