The United States men's national soccer team will remain under Mauricio Pochettino through the 2030 World Cup. US Soccer announced the extension on Monday, after the coach led the team to the round of 16 at this year's World Cup.
The 54-year-old Argentine, known for favoring an attacking style built on heavy pressing, took charge of the US team in 2024 after leaving Chelsea earlier that year. His previous contract had run through the 2026 World Cup.
US Soccer CEO JT Batson said in a statement that Pochettino and his coaching staff believed in the future of soccer in the United States, and that the new deal allowed the federation to build on the men's national team's progress and positive momentum.
Under Pochettino, the US finished top of its World Cup group, ahead of Australia, Paraguay and Turkey. The six points collected marked the best group-stage total in the history of the US men's national team at the tournament. The team then beat Bosnia in the round of 32, but lost 4-1 to Belgium in the round of 16, ending a campaign that had hoped to go further while playing at home.
Pochettino on the team's potential
Pochettino said that after working with US Soccer for the past two years, it had become clear there was enormous potential to make the men's national team program even stronger. He added that the passion shown by fans throughout the World Cup had reinforced his belief in what could be built there.
A former Argentina national team defender, Pochettino led Southampton to eighth place in the Premier League in 2013, then the club's best finish in the competition's history. He later guided Tottenham Hotspur to their first Champions League final in 2019, and led Paris Saint-Germain to the French league title in 2022.
Pochettino left Chelsea by mutual agreement in 2024 following a turbulent season. Despite the difficulties, the team rallied late and finished sixth in the Premier League.
