PSP holds Benfica responsible for Estádio da Luz fan zone

The Public Security Police has distanced itself from the fan zone that Benfica plans to set up near Estádio da Luz for Sunday's match against Académico de Viseu. The fixture on August 9 will be played behind closed doors following a penalty imposed by the Sports Violence Prevention and Combating Authority for repeated use of pyrotechnics.

The Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP stated in an official announcement that it will police the sporting event and ensure compliance with the sanction applied by the competent judicial authority. The police explicitated that the event promoted by Benfica outside the stadium perimeter is the sole responsibility of and organized by the promoter.

Police coordination and security green light

Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã reported in its Friday edition that green light for the fan zone had not been requested from the PSP. The police responded that their commitment is limited to maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of the sporting event and sports participants.

The PSP noted that it promoted coordination with Benfica security directors to ensure compliance with current regulations and allow the event to take place safely.

Player appeal and authority clarification

Hours after the PSP issued its stance, Benfica shared an appeal on its website from team captain Tomás Araújo encouraging fans to attend the fan zone. Araújo asked supporters to send their energy to the team, adding that even while separated, they would be together and show the strength of Benfica.

The Sports Violence Prevention and Combating Authority clarified to newspaper Record that the fan zone does not breach the imposed penalty of one match behind closed doors. Separately, Proença will watch the Benfica match at Estádio da Luz.
