The Football Show airs BasketGate updates and cup derbies

The Football Show broadcast live on Tuesday to analyse four pre-trial detentions in the BasketGate match-fixing scandal and two major Greek Cup football derbies.

Basketball referee Ilias Koromilas became the fourth official remanded in custody, following earlier detention orders issued against Vangelis Liolios, Petros Papapetrou and Dimitris Mavraganis. Two other prominent referees, Vaso Tsaroucha and Petros Piloidis, were placed under house arrest with electronic tracking bracelets following rulings by the investigating magistrate and prosecutor.

The daily digital broadcast on protothema.gr focused on the legal aftermath confronting the six officials, examining statements from their defence attorneys and the immediate next steps in the judicial investigation.

BasketGate detentions and judicial fallout

Judicial authorities accelerated their inquiry into the alleged match-fixing ring, with Koromilas taken into pre-trial custody after answering formal charges. The decision followed the earlier detention of Liolios, Papapetrou and Mavraganis, consolidating a sweeping inquiry across the upper tier of Greek basketball officiating.

Tsaroucha and Piloidis were restricted to home confinement with electronic monitoring bracelets starting on Monday. Both officials avoided prison detention while remaining under judicial supervision as investigators review their roles in the alleged scheme.

The judicial files also include witness testimony from a female colleague who stated to prosecutors that Koromilas threatened her with a lawsuit after referees were referred to the public prosecutor, and subsequently arranged her removal from the FIBA international officiating roster.

The expanding scandal has intensified administrative pressure inside the Hellenic Basketball Federation, known as EOK. Federation officials are now considering potential dates for leadership elections that are scheduled to take place in December.

Tensions in Greek basketball also widened beyond the courthouse as Olympiacos BC submitted formal complaints against Panathinaikos president Dimitris Giannakopoulos to EuroLeague and domestic league organiser ESAKE. Giannakopoulos confirmed on Monday night that two complaints had been served against him.

Greek Cup football derbies

In football, the programme highlighted a high-stakes round in the Greek Cup, with four of the country's most prominent clubs drawn into two separate derby matches. Panathinaikos and Aris Thessaloniki are finalising their preparations ahead of their showdown at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, known locally as OAKA.

In northern Greece, PAOK host AEK Athens in Thessaloniki for the second major clash of the cup schedule. Correspondents detailed squad selections, tactical approaches and the atmosphere surrounding both fixtures as clubs aim for domestic silverware.

Panathinaikos approach their cup tie dealing with a major squad blow after midfielder Azzedine Ounahi suffered a complete tendon rupture. The Moroccan international requires surgery, leaving the Athens side without an influential playmaker for an extended period.

Injury problems also affected Greek players abroad, with central defender Dimitris Goutas suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during Genclerbirligi's Turkish league match against Konyaspor.

EuroLeague double round fixtures

Greek basketball clubs also face an intense schedule in continental competition, with Panathinaikos and Olympiacos entering a two-game EuroLeague round known as devil week. Both Athens rivals must contest two high-intensity European games within four days to test their squad depth.

Panathinaikos will encounter an Armani Milano squad missing forward Alec Peters, who has been ruled out of the contest in Milan. EuroLeague analysts highlighted the fixture as a critical test of resilience as Greek teams balance domestic investigations with European campaigns.
