Toulouse Football Club are closing in on the signing of Danish midfielder Thomas Jorgensen as defender Dayann Methalie prepares for a move to Sunderland.
The French top flight club are set to welcome Jorgensen ahead of their Ligue 1 season opener against Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday, August 22. At the same time, France Under 21 international Methalie could finalize his departure to English football within hours.
The transfer activity comes immediately after Toulouse completed their summer preseason schedule on Saturday evening with a 2-1 loss against German side Hamburg SV at the Stadium de Toulouse.
Dayann Methalie transfer negotiations with Sunderland
Toulouse head coach Jens Berthel Askou addressed reports surrounding Methalie following Saturday's final friendly match. The 20-year-old defender was present at the stadium but left off the match sheet entirely.
Askou said he understood the questions regarding Methalie, but noted that there were many rumors and that the media played a significant role in creating them. The Danish coach added that journalists perform their work while the club carries out its own, stating there was nothing to confirm at present and that speculation could continue.
Methalie was handed his professional debut last season by former manager Carles Martinez Novell. According to reports from RMC Sport in France, the defender's transfer to England could generate nearly 30 million euros for Toulouse, including performance bonuses.
Toulouse president Olivier Cloarec had rejected an earlier 33 million euro proposal from Sunderland. However, a revised offer structured with 28 million euros in guaranteed funds and 2 million euros in add-ons satisfied both Cloarec and club owner RedBird Capital Partners.
Thomas Jorgensen medical and transfer fee details
The windfall from Methalie's pending departure, combined with the earlier 32 million euro sale of forward Emersonn to Ipswich Town, has enabled Toulouse to reactivate their pursuit of Jorgensen.
According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, the 20-year-old midfielder is scheduled to fly to Toulouse on Monday to undergo a medical and complete contract formalities. Toulouse will pay an initial 7.5 million euros to Danish club Viborg.
With performance add-ons included, the total package for Jorgensen is expected to reach nearly 9 million euros. The deal will represent the largest player sale in Viborg history.
Danish midfielder profile and player attributes
Jorgensen enjoyed a productive campaign with Viborg in Denmark's top tier, recording 5 goals and 9 assists after joining the Jutland based side from FC Copenhagen in 2024. His performances earned him a first senior call-up to the Denmark national team in June, though he remained on the bench.
A left-footed box-to-box midfielder, Jorgensen is known for his ability to carry the ball forward and break lines with direct passing. He arrives in France with full match fitness, having started all four of Viborg's Superliga fixtures so far this season.
Toulouse will look to integrate Jorgensen quickly as they finalize their squad ahead of the new Ligue 1 campaign.
