Toulouse FC switch to four-man defence under Jens Askou

Toulouse Football Club have adopted a four-man defensive line under new manager Jens Berthel Askou during pre-season preparations.

The tactical change marks a departure from the three-man central defence previously used by Catalan coach Carles Martinez Novell. Askou, a Danish coach who arrived at the club on May 21 after managing Scottish side Motherwell, introduced the classical four-defender system in Toulouse's first friendly against Ligue 2 side Rodez at Montauban on July 25.

Askou explained that while observers debate whether his side lines up in a 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2, or 4-3-3 formation, the specific layout is less important than maintaining high dynamism. The manager emphasized speed, force, intensity, and movement as his guiding principles rather than rigid tactical systems.

Central defensive options and minutes

Danish central defender Rasmus Nicolaisen has established himself on the left side of the central pairing, wearing the captain's armband across the summer friendlies. Nicolaisen logged 242 minutes during the four preparatory matches, making him one of the most used players of the pre-season alongside full-back Tapé and midfielder Cristian Casseres Jr.

On the right side of central defence, Koumbassa featured initially before American defender Mark McKenzie returned to action against Spanish club Elche. McKenzie was the last squad member to rejoin pre-season training following his appearance at the World Cup. Elsewhere in central defence, Charlie Cresswell left the club after being sold to Rennes, while squad members Bakhouche played 162 minutes and Bique recorded 71 minutes in reserve roles.

In the goalkeeper position, Toulouse have seen no player movements during the current window. Primary goalkeeper Guillaume Restes remains with the team, while backup goalkeeper Justin Niflore stands ready.

Full-back positions and transfer speculation

Full-backs Diallo and Tapé earned praise for their performances on the flanks during the four warm-up games. Messali also remains an option for the full-back role if he avoids injury problems during the campaign.

Youth prospect Dayann Methalie remains a primary starting option, with the potential to play higher up the pitch, provided he stays at Toulouse beyond the transfer deadline on September 1 at 7:59 p.m. Toulouse have requested 40 million euros for Methalie amid interest from several competing clubs, following previous player movements including the arrival of 18-year-old Swedish winger Sion Oppong and the departure of Brazilian forward Emersonn.

Julian Vignolo, en jambes contre la Real Sociedad (2-1), aura une carte à jouer ce soir.

Defensive midfield setup

In front of the back four, Askou has tested two defensive midfield pairings featuring a defensive number six and a central number eight. The primary duo of Cristian Casseres Jr and Alexis Vossah established themselves during the friendlies, with Casseres Jr handling ball recovery and Vossah providing forward projection.

Vossah emerged as one of the standout players of the off-season. A secondary midfield pair of Francis and Sauer provides further depth, though the overall coverage depends on whether Venezuelan international Casseres Jr remains at the club through the transfer window.

Pre-season results and final fixture

Toulouse recorded two consecutive victories across their first three friendly outings before suffering a heavy defeat against Elche in their fourth match. The loss against the Spanish side was their first defeat of the summer preparation period, coming two weeks before the start of the new Ligue 1 season.

The squad will finish their pre-season schedule with a fifth and final friendly against German club Hamburg SV at the Stadium in Toulouse on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. General admission tickets start at 9 euros in the virage Taton section, while subscribers holding the Totjorn Mai pass receive complimentary access.
