Toulouse Football Club coach Jens Berthel Askou criticised his players' attitude after his team fell 2-0 behind at Lorient on Saturday night in Ligue 1, before a reshuffled side fought back to draw 2-2.
Askou rejected the idea that his team had simply lost a tactical battle in the first half. He said Toulouse had put themselves in difficulty on their own because they lacked technical quality, and he called the way his side defended Lorient's opening goal unacceptable.
"I was very disappointed, and therefore very clear at halftime on this point," Askou said.
Two players pulled at the break
In the dressing room, Askou hit his fist on the table and took off two players, Rafik Messali and Santiago Hidalgo, reshaping his entire right side for the second half.
Askou said that if Toulouse wanted to take control of the match, they needed more technical quality, more connection between players in the final third, and to be stronger defensively.
He did not name Messali or Hidalgo directly in his post-match interviews, but the message appeared clear: there would be no place in his team for players who were not committed enough in desire and intensity.
Second-half turnaround
That message should land more easily given that Askou's halftime decisions paid off. While Messali and Hidalgo were far from the only players responsible for a poor first half, Toulouse transformed after the break, helped by substitutes who made an immediate impact.
Among them was Casper Tengstedt, who scored his first goal for Toulouse, and Sion Oppong, the 18-year-old Swedish winger.
Askou said Oppong had a big impact on the match, that his introduction was very good and that he came close to making the difference. He added that Oppong's decision-making was also improving very quickly.
The result is that no player at Toulouse can now consider their place in the starting eleven guaranteed.

Toulouse Football Club, known as TFC, plays in Ligue 1, the top division of French football. Askou, a Danish coach, has been building his squad around a mix of experienced players and younger talents such as Oppong and Tengstedt.
