UEFA announced on Thursday that its boycott of FIFA competitions, including World Cups, remains in force despite FIFA abandoning plans for outside investors. The European football confederation stated that its member associations had established clear conditions regarding their refusal to participate in tournaments organized by global governing body FIFA.
UEFA said that while FIFA dropped its project to open a commercial company to outside investors, FIFA has not provided assurances that similar attempts to alter football will not happen again. Consequently, the European body affirmed it has lost confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
FIFA Executive Apology
On Wednesday, FIFA executives held a crisis meeting in Morocco where management acknowledged errors and apologized for the aborted investment plan. During the meeting, FIFA declared full support for Infantino, describing him as the only leader elected by the 211 member associations of FIFA.
UEFA dismissed the backing, stating that a declaration from employees whose careers depend on the FIFA president changes nothing. The standoff between the two governing bodies continues.
