Vitória defeated Athletico-PR 4-0 on Thursday night at the Barradão stadium in Salvador, Bahia, to advance to the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals. The home team reversed a 2-0 first-leg deficit from Curitiba to win the round-of-16 tie on aggregate.
Renê scored twice, while Erick and Marinho added one goal each for the Salvador club. The victory eliminated Athletico-PR from the competition.
Vitória attacked from the opening whistle needing two goals to erase the first-leg disadvantage. Baralhas took a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area ten minutes into the match. Athletico-PR goalkeeper Santos made a partial save and yielded a rebound, allowing Renê to finish into the back of the net.
First half stoppage time goal
The early goal opened up the match as Vitória kept pressure on the visitors. Athletico-PR attempted to attack on counterattacks while the hosts maintained control.
Erick doubled the lead at 49 minutes during first-half stoppage time. The forward struck a powerful left-footed shot that deflected off Renato Kayzer and left Santos with no chance to save.
Second half dominance and qualification
Athletico-PR returned after the interval with a more offensive posture. Goalkeeper Lucas Arcanjo preserved the lead eight minutes into the second half by making two major saves following a corner kick.
Vitória regained control with support from the home crowd and scored a third goal from a set piece. Erick delivered a corner kick into the area, Santos misjudged the ball, and Renê scored his second goal to put Vitória ahead on aggregate.
Both teams created chances during a fast-paced final period. Marinho completed the 4-0 win after a play by Fabri to secure qualification for the home side.
