Arsenal beat Coventry 3-0 to open Premier League defence

Arsenal kicked off their Premier League title defence with a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta's side dominated every department against the Sky Blues, proving too quick, too strong and far more clinical in front of goal to send an early statement of intent to their rivals.

Arteta set his team up in a 4-3-3 system that overwhelmed Coventry from the outset, earning the manager a 9 rating in the player assessments by Daily Mail Sport reporter Isaan Khan. Frank Lampard, who fielded Coventry in a 4-1-4-1 formation, was given a 5 rating as his side struggled to contain the hosts.

Attacking dominance and goal scorers

Greek winger Christos Tzolis enjoyed a standout debut for Arsenal, receiving the top match rating of 9 after terrifying the Coventry defence throughout his time on the pitch. Tzolis sparked the opening goal by making an interception and feeding Riccardo Calafiori, who advanced up the pitch to set up Kai Havertz for a composed, low first-time finish.

Havertz earned a 7.5 rating for his display, looking fully fit and embracing his role as Arsenal's primary striker. Calafiori was rated 7, with his unorthodox positioning giving Coventry constant problems before he was replaced by Piero Hincapie in the 82nd minute.

Tzolis was involved again for Arsenal's second goal before half-time when his cross led to Bukayo Saka turning in an easy tap-in. Saka, who earned a 7.5 rating, was given ample time and space to attack Coventry left-back Jay Dasilva and saw several other shots and crosses deflected wide during the match.

Gabriel didn't put a foot wrong on a quiet night for him and his defensive partners

Right-back Ben White scored a 7 after linking up effectively with Saka down the right flank, constantly looking for interchanges and delivering crisp crosses into the penalty area.

Midfield control and second-half changes

In midfield, captain Martin Odegaard was rated 8.5 for an energetic performance that demonstrated why he is the key cog in Arteta's side. Odegaard showed high confidence and full fitness during an influential display before making way for Mikel Merino in the 76th minute.

Declan Rice earned a 7 rating in midfield, showing a strong hunger to get on the scoresheet with several sighters at goal, including a left-footed curling strike that whistled just wide of the post. Myles Lewis-Skelly also scored 7, thriving in his midfield role by keeping the ball moving forward quickly and preventing Coventry from catching their breath.

Bukayo Saka scored Arsenal's second before half-time

Arteta made a double substitution in the 68th minute, introducing Noni Madueke for Rice and Martin Zubimendi for Saka, with both incoming players earning 6.5 ratings. Ebere Eze came on alongside Merino in the 76th minute to replace Tzolis.

Defensive quiet and Coventry player ratings

Arsenal's defensive line faced minimal disruption across the 90 minutes. Goalkeeper David Raya scored 6.5 on a quiet evening, remaining alert to keep out an ambitious first-half attempt from Loum Tchaouna in his only major test.

In central defence, Gabriel and Cristhian Mosquera both received 6.5 ratings without putting a foot wrong. Gabriel stood up well to the physical challenge of Coventry forward Ellis Simms, while Mosquera looked composed on the ball and complemented Gabriel effectively in a game dominated by the champions.

Kai Havertz set Arsenal on their way with a well-taken, low finish

For Coventry, goalkeeper Rushworth received a 5 rating behind a back four where right-back Van Ewijk scored 4, central defenders Thomas and Amenda both scored 6, and left-back Dasilva scored 5. In midfield, captain Grimes was rated 6, while Yirenkyi scored 4 before being replaced on 63 minutes by Torp, who received a 6 rating. Onyeka was given a 5, and Tchaouna scored 5 before being withdrawn for Hamer in the 82nd minute.

Up front, Thomas-Asante and Simms both earned 6 ratings before both were substituted in the 70th minute, making way for Rudoni and Awoniyi, who both scored 6.
