Arsenal won their 18th Community Shield on Sunday by defeating Manchester City 3-0 in Cardiff, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring inside the opening minute.
Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard added second half and first half goals as the English champions dominated Enzo Maresca's side from start to finish at the traditional season opener.
The fixture brought together Premier League champions Arsenal, who suffered a Champions League final defeat against Paris Saint-Germain seven weeks ago, and FA Cup winners Manchester City. It marked the first competitive match for Italian manager Maresca, who took over at City following the departure of Pep Guardiola after a ten year tenure.
Early goals put Arsenal in command
Arsenal took the lead before sixty seconds had elapsed on the clock. Myles Lewis-Skelly picked out Calafiori with a pass through the central axis, and the defender finished cleanly to give the London side an immediate advantage.
Manchester City attempted to respond during the first half, creating opening chances through Erling Haaland and Phil Foden. However, City struggled to sustain intensity or collective movement against Arsenal's high pressing scheme.
Arsenal doubled their lead in the 28th minute after circulating possession around City's twenty yard line. Odegaard took time on the ball before floating a cross to the far post for Christos Tzolis, who headed the ball back across goal for Havertz to nod past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Arsenal went into the half-time break with a comfortable two goal cushion, having controlled the tempo and restricted City's attacking play.
Odegaard seals victory after restart
Arsenal extended their advantage in the 47th minute, scoring early in the second half just as they had in the first. Tzolis advanced down the left flank before finding Odegaard inside the penalty area. The Arsenal captain executed a fake shot to create space before placing a side-footed finish into the net past Donnarumma.
City tried to alter the course of the match, but discipline slipped in the 53rd minute when Josko Gvardiol received a yellow card for a tackle on Havertz.
Maresca made his first tactical changes in the 54th minute, withdrawing Haaland and O'Reilly to bring on Omar Marmoush and Marc Guéhi. Despite the changes, Arsenal supporters began chanting olé across the stadium before the hour mark as their team maintained control.
Substitutions and late City pressure
Both managers introduced further replacements on sixty minutes. City brought on Rayan Cherki and Rico Lewis for Foden and Anderson, while Arsenal replaced Calafiori and Noni Madueke with Piero Hincapié and Bukayo Saka.
Saka made an immediate impact in the 63rd minute by beating Gvardiol down the wing, though his shot from a narrow angle went wide when options were available inside the penalty box. City remained largely ineffective, with substitute Antoine Semenyo struggling to make an impact on the flank.
City registered their first clear opportunity of the second half in the 73rd minute when Cherki struck a powerful shot, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya made a decisive save to turn the effort away.
Arsenal made their final substitutions in the 75th minute, replacing Havertz and Lewis-Skelly with Viktor Gyökeres and Martin Zubimendi. Three minutes later, Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes executed a strong sliding tackle to stop Lewis in the penalty box and earn a goal kick.
Raya saves preserve clean sheet
Arsenal continued to press for more goals late in the game. In the 80th minute, Hincapié delivered a precise cross to Saka, whose volley flew just over Donnarumma's crossbar.
City threatened again in the 81st minute when Semenyo unleashed a powerful strike, but Raya produced another strong save with a firm hand to maintain Arsenal's three goal lead.
Cherki attempted to inspire a late surge for City, but Arsenal maintained high pressing up to the final whistle despite holding a comfortable margin. Refereeing signals brought the match to a close after three minutes of stoppage time, confirming Arsenal's victory.
The defeat leaves Maresca with work to do ahead of Manchester City's opening Premier League fixture against Bournemouth next week.
