The Major League Baseball playoffs are going to be a little bigger this season.
They are also fast approaching: the last matches on the calendar are set for October 5th. The playoffs start two days later and have 12 teams, two more than last year. The new format notably includes a best-of-three first round between the champion of the section with the third-best record and the three clubs that finished first in the fourth ranking.
More playoff participants could lead to some very interesting showdowns: the San Diego Padres and their new acquisition Juan Soto against defending champions Atlanta Braves? Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals against Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and the Philadelphia Phillies?
These two series may see the light of day depending on the results of the last week of activity.

The new first-round format is similar to the one currently used for the NCAA’s “super regional” round: all three games will be played on three consecutive days, October 7-9, at the stadium of the highest-ranked team.
After this round, the series will be played according to the usual formats. The Section Series will be best-of-five games, while the Championship Series and World Series will be four-of-seven.
Here’s a little more information about the revamped MLB series.
What’s new in the first round?
These two out of three replace the only game that was in place since 2012.
Six teams from the American and National will qualify for the playoffs, including the three section winners. The three teams with the best records in each league’s best second ranking are added to this list.
The two best records from each league receive a pass for this first round. As of Monday, Tuesday, those teams would be the Houston Astros and New York Yankees at the American, and the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets at the National.
The first round will oppose the other four formations. Teams ranked 3rd and 4th will receive the 6th and 5th best records respectively.
Why do the playoffs start so late?
The fall classic will run until November, before a champion is crowned. This is mainly due to the work stoppage last winter. The lockdown imposed by the owners delayed the start of the season by a week. Players and owners managed to redeem the 162-game schedule, but for that, the season started only on April 7, not March 31.
The end of the calendar, originally slated for October 2, was pushed back by three days, hence the series that run the longest.
What happened to the suicidal fight?
the 163and departure is now a thing of the past. Bucky Dent’s home run for the Yankees in 1978. Matt Holliday’s winning run for the Colorado Rockies in 2007: those days are over.
If there is a tie for any of the playoff spots, mathematical tiebreakers will be used instead of an additional match. The first will be the record between the two teams involved.
If the tie persists, the team with the best intra-section record will qualify. If that’s not enough, more breaks – each more complex than the last – until a solution is found.
Tiebreakers are unlikely to be used at the American, but keep an eye out for the race at the National. The Braves and Mets are neck-and-neck in the East, while the Milwaukee Brewers and Phillies are fighting for the final playoff berth.
Who are the favourites?
Excellent question.
The Dodgers dominated throughout the season with a roster that includes Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, Will Smith and Freddie Freeman. They can reach the threshold of 110 wins.
In the American, the Astros already have more than 100 victories on the clock and are betting on José Altuve, Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez, in addition to the possible winner of Cy-Young Justin Verlander.
New Yorkers should also be considered. The Yankees are off to a good start to the season but are 30-31 since the All-Star Game break. The Mets have possibly the most depth in baseball on the mound, including two aces in Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer.
