(Atlanta) The Atlanta Braves made another move to solidify their future on Monday by signing a $75 million contract with rookie pitcher Spencer Strider.

The Braves announced the news on the eve of Game 1 of their second-round series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The deal also comes less than two months after the National League team struck a deal with fellow debutant Michael Harris II, who put his name at the bottom of an eight-year contract valued at 72 million.

Strider, a 23-year-old right-hander, will earn 1 million per season in 2023 and 2024, 4 million in 2025, 20 million in 2026 and 22 million per season in 2027 and 2028.

The contract also includes an optional clause for 2029, at the team’s discretion, which comes to 22 million with an option to buy at 5 million. If the Braves exercise the contract option in 2029, the total value of the deal will be $92 million.

General Manager Alex Anthopoulos began negotiations with the Strider clan in early September.

“Sometimes these situations take a while and there are comings and goings. But we are grateful that we came to an agreement. »

Strider said he’s looking forward to closing the deal because he feels there’s a commitment to winning in the Braves’ locker room, not just now, but in the future.

“It means a lot to me. It’s really cool and touching to have the opportunity to stay here,” he said.

Strider started the season as a reliever, but solidified the Braves’ initial pitch rotation to the point where he helped the team win a fifth straight Eastern League title.

Strider became the first pitcher in history to accumulate at least 200 strikeouts while giving up less than 100 hits.

In 31 games, including 20 as a starter, Strider went 11-5 with an ERA of 2.67. He hit 202 strikeouts in 131 and 2/3 innings, hitting just 86 hits.

“He’s not afraid of anybody,” said catcher Travis d’Arnaud. “He believes in himself, which I think is the most important thing. »

An oblique muscle strain has forced Strider out of action since September 18. The Braves said they were optimistic he would return to play in the playoffs.
