(St. Petersburg) The Tampa Bay Rays, in partnership with a global real estate investment and development company, have submitted a proposal to redevelop Tropicana Field and land around downtown St. Petersburg.
The team mentioned on Friday that, in addition to a new stadium, an ambitious plan for the historic gas district would include more than 5,700 multi-family units, 1.4 million square feet of office space, 300,000 square feet of retail businesses, 700 hotel rooms, 600 seniors’ residences and a 2,500-seat entertainment venue.
For more than a decade, the Rays have been looking for a new home to replace Tropicana Field, the domed stadium where the team has played since joining Major League Baseball in 1998.
The Rays often finish near the bottom of the major leagues in single-season assist average. The team’s lease at Tropicana Field expires in 2027.

Major League Baseball recently rejected a midseason proposal that would have involved building new stadiums in Florida and Quebec, while the Rays would play some home games in the Tampa Bay area and the rest in Montreal.
The Rays are partnering with real estate development and investment firm Hines, which also joined the team to explore the prospect of building a stadium in downtown St. Petersburg in 2008. That plan involved building on the site of Al Lang Stadium, where spring camp games have been played in the past.

The Rays’ proposal was among four submitted to the city ahead of Friday’s deadline. A developer must be selected by the end of January.
