(New York) Center fielder Brandon Nimmo remains with the New York Mets. The team that spends lavishly offered him a contract for the next eight seasons and $162 million.

This was learned Thursday night by the Associated Press from a source familiar with the matter. The deal has not been officially announced, as Nimmo has yet to undergo a full medical.

Nimmo, however, wrote that he was happy to be back in New York on his social media.

An excellent first hitter in the role, Nimmo has a career average of . 385 on bases. He enjoyed full autonomy for the first time.

Known for his hard work and big smile, Nimmo hit . 274 in 2022 with 16 home runs and 102 runs scored, a Mets high and a personal best. Troubled by injuries in the past, Nimmo also set personal bests with 151 games played, in addition to having added 64 points.

Nimmo was the 13and 2011 overall pick. He turned down a $19.65 million qualifying offer for 2023 last month.

The 29-year-old Wyoming baseball player made his major league debut in 2016. Since then, he has averaged . 269/. 385/. 441 with 63 home runs and 23 triples and produced 213 runs in 608 games.

Nimmo’s return means all of the Mets’ regulars, who made the playoffs for the first time since 2016 this season, are back.

However, the pitching team still needs to be rebuilt. Although the team attracted Justin Verlander for the next two years, Jacob deGrom and Taijuan Walker took advantage of the autonomy to look elsewhere.

One thing’s for sure: The Mets may still have the biggest payroll in the Majors, which was 273.9 million as of Aug. 31, before bonuses are calculated.
